What should I charge?

Starting next school year I will be watching my cousin's then 12 month old for 3 hours per day for 4 days a week. It will be at my home (with my 5 and 2 year old). I'm not looking to make $$$, just to be fairly compensated for my time. This will be after my normal work day, I work for a SD so I get out early. What should I "charge" her?

If she had someone coming to her house she would probably pay on average 150/week. Since she's going to your house and you have your kids too I would say 75/week is fair. When my aunt used to watch another relative's son she would charge her 40 for a full day.

I think $125 sounds fine.

did your cousin ask how much you're charging? bc its family I'd probably just have a conversation with my cousin to see what her expectations are and go from there. I wouldn't feel comfortable "charging" a certain amount.

Re: What should I charge?

I would't charge family more then $100. And if I knew they really needed the help, I wouldn't charge them at all or maybe $50.

I would ask your cousin what she was thinking of paying. I think $100 a week would be good.

We didn't discuss how much yet, I just wanted to have an idea what was fair. He will be at my house from 7am-5pm. She and I will split the cost of a babysitter for the 7 hours I'll be out of the house. The babysitter has to leave when I get home so I will watch him those extra hours. I'm happy to help, but it will be a lot of work with the 3 kids, doing home work with my soon to be Kindergartener and getting dinner on the table etc... I also won't be able to go anywhere after work, but I'd really like to help her because she needs those hours covered.

In that particular situation, I would not be charging her anything. Given that it's your cousin and its 3 hours each afternoon, if I was going to charge, I would say $20-25/day.

I agree as well. IF I did charge - it would be like $40/$50 for the week. But I honestly don't think I would even charge a faimly member for this situation.

Maybe she could just pay a little more to the babysitter
While I feel it's weird to charge her you are doing a lot for her that's a difficult time of the day

Re: What should I charge?

I feel weird taking $ from her, but having an extra kid who will go from 12 months to 22 months over the course of the school year for 3 hrs per day after I get home from work would seriously impact my everyday life. I won't be able to leave him alone with my son to make dinner, switch the laundry ect... I'm going to have to be creative. It's totally doable, but it's not like the 2 little one are 3 & 4 yrs. they will need very close supervision. My kids eat dinner at 5:00/5:15ish and are in bed by 7:00. It's going to be a little crazy. As the boys get older it will be much easier but next yr they will be such a handful. If it was just an hr per day I would never think to ask for $. But 3hrs?? Ugh. I fell badly now.

This is what will end up happening. She wouldn't be giving me $ directly. Just paying he sitter more.

so why not just have the sitter stay longer and have her pay the difference. the sitter staying longer will benefit you too she can help out with her kids and yours if need be while you are cooking doing laundry etc.

ETA: I just saw your other post the babysitter has to leave. maybe you can find someone else for those 3 hours like a mothers helper again it will def. benefit you too having someone else there helping out while trying to get things done.

ITA. My brother and I used to share a sitter and they would watch my DD for an hour or two twice a week. I would be annoyed if they charged me.

I agree, but I assume you knew all this when you agreed to share a sitter. You save money by sharing. If you don't want to get involved in watching her DS then I wouldn't share the sitter.

I don't blame you for not wanting to watch a third kid and one that isn't yours, but I personally wouldn't feel comfortable asking for money. I would tell your cousin he can stay but she needs to hire a mothers helper so you can take care of dinner, housework, etc.

I would never think of charging if I was only watching him for an hour or 2 per week, heck I wouldn't even charge for an hour a day but 3 hours per day? It's going to be a LOT of work.

I wouldn't charge her. Are you sure she realized you are going to ask for compensation? She might have thought paying the sitter was the only arrangement.

I wouldn't charge either. Just ask to be supplied with diapers and what he needs to eat or drink if it is something not on hand.

I'd charge no more than 1/4 of what the babysitter would charge per hour. You are watching at your own house & you have 2 other kids. Timing is irrelevant. That comes to prob $40-$50 a week.

She should actually pay less than half for AM hours of sitter (if your sitter is watching your two kids and her one for any period of time)... Esp if sitter is coming to your house.

Re: What should I charge?

My SIL watched my son 2 days a week from 7:30-3:15 and I paid $65 a day, she did not ask for money but I did not feel right not paying using that math it would be @ 100 a week for you. I know people say you should not ask but my opinion is that I did not feel right not giving her something.
