What do you do when your baby has a meltdown in the car?
I got stuck in I-95 traffic today. A 1.5 hour drive turned out to be almost 4 hours (including 4 stops to calm DS down). DS usually loves car rides but not stop and go 10mph car rides. During the last 7 miles to my parents' house, I drove with a screaming baby for 30 minutes. I think it was the longest 30 minutes of my life. What a nightmare!
What do you do when you are in the car and your DC starts crying? Do you pull over or just try to get your destination if it isn't too far away?

The same thing happened to me tonight! My heart broke until she stopped. I just keep driving-- she always stops eventually. It almost always happens in a place where I can't pull over. However, there is no point in pulling over bc the only thing that will stop her from crying is me taking her out of her seat, and I am not going to do that on the side of the road!

I pulled over on the shoulder and took DS out of his car seat. I calmed him down and he was happy but as soon as I put him back, he started screaming again. It was awful!
the other 3x i pulled over into rest stops or exited.

I keep driving. I would never take my kid out of a carseat on a shoulder of a rode. If its a long trip then I will get off at a exit and find somewhere safe to take them out.

Normally I would never do that either but we literally stopped moving. We moved like half a mile in half an hour and DS was screaming at the top of his lungs so I had to pull over.
What an awful day.

I've pulled into parking lots to calm them down but otherwise I ride it out.
I know it's heartbreaking.

me too...Kaydyn HATED being in her car seat for the first 4-5 months. She would literally scream as soon as I strapped her in until I took her out at our destination. A couple of times in the beginning I would pull into a parking lot or a side street and try to comfort her, but I realized quickly that as soon as I started moving again she was inconsolable. I just tried to get to my destinations as quickly and safely as possible. cause I know it's hard.

I usually just ride it out. DS usually calms down eventually. Sometimes it helps if I turn the radio up. It always breaks my heart when he cries in the car

I started reading this reply about pulling over to calm him and I was thinking if I did that, my kids would have been screaming the second I tried to put them back in. I guess it's the normal response. They just want out. Period.
Luckily my kids are old enough now that they don't do this (except my 3 year old once in awhile) but I think that unless they are hurt or hyperventilating, you have to just keep going. I've been there and it is so stressful. A book or a drink, something to divert their attention is worth trying. Their music on CD or if they are old enough, books on CD. I have a bunch of Curious Georges (and otherage appropriate) on CD (now on my Ipod ) and the kids like to listen to the stories. Great for drives even if they are not fussing but just bored.

Re: What do you do when your baby has a meltdown in the car?
We never pulled over. I figured that that would just prolong their discomfort. Also, if they are screaming, they are still breathing, so they are relatively OK...

I had DD screaming for 40 minutes on Friday. I let her cry & pray she stops. I do not stop the car.

before we had the DVD players in the car we used to put the DMB Radio City Music Hall concert on the radio (DS was in utero when i saw the show and that album seems to calm him)
