i need some mommy advice... baby with cord around her neck?

so i got a call today that my baby has a nuchal cord wrapped around her neck 2 times. i have a few other issues as well including a tilted tail bone, high blood pressure, pre term labor, and a giant baby.

when the doc called with the growth sono results it sounded as if she was 95% sure that i would need a c section as long as i was on board for it (which i totally am i DO NOT want to take any risks with having this baby not breathing because ofthe cord)

Any other BTDT moms know before labor about the cord around the neck...

did you have a scheduled section? or vaginal deliver? was the baby ok?

they have me going in 2 times a week for the next 2 weeks for NST and sonos. im sure they are doing everything they should be but now im really worried for my baby and my health.

I had a c-section because DS was breech but once they went in, they realized that the cord was wrapped around his neck.

DS was absolutely fine when he was born and the ped. told me afterwards the cord was around his neck.

Honestly, the whole procedure was one quick blur to me and I had no indication during it that there was ever a problem.

I know it's somewhat different bc you know, but I'm sure your drs are doing everything they need to ensure a safe delivery.

I was told by my dr that they couldnt see if the cord was around the neck or not. Honestly, I don't want to scare you but my DD, who now is a healthy 8 year old was born vaginally with the cord wrapped around her neck 3 times and a true knot in her cord. I can tell you that it was a scary scary experience. Her apgars were 3 and 7 and she wound up being fine due to the great dr's that were on call in the hospital since my dr was not there yet.
Due to my experience with that i asked my dr with my recent pregnancy if there was a way they could tell about the cord and they said they could never tell you for sure, but after going through the scare i did with my first i seriously considered a c-section. Eventually i did have a vaginal birth againa dn the cord was not around her neck this time.
I would go with your gut feelings and whats right for you.

and i will def. keep you posted as ill be over on this board soon (i really cant wait! i feel like this has been the longest 9 months of my life!)

im sure the docs are doing everything they can i just dont want to take any risks by having a vaginal delivery if any problems can be easily avoided with a csection. i know its major abdominal surgery but for the safety of the baby ill take the surgery!

I remembering being very nervous about this and the dr. told me the only time it is harmful to the baby is during labor. inside the baby is floating in fluid so the cord can't wrap tightly but when your water breaks and you are pushing the baby during vaginal delivery it can pull tight. That's why if they know the cord is around the neck they usually do c-section.

I saw the cord around my babys neck in the 3d sonos. I told my doc and he said he would keep an eye on it, but because of how they twist and move so much, it proably wasnt a concern. I was induced because he was getting very big, and I , like you, wanted to go naturally. I was DEAD SET against the c-section. Long story short, after 21 hrs of labor, I had to have an emergncy csection because the baby was not getting any oxygen because the cord was tightening around his neck with every contraction. Needless to say, he is here, healthy, and I wouldnt have cared if they had to cut me from head to toe to get him here that way. The c-section is not that bad. That combined with your other issues, I would just do the section, honestly. Good luck!

kristie thanks for sharing your story and im glad to your your DD is fine now... i just cant see a reason they would NOT do a csection if they know already the cord is around her neck? i think they are just waiting to see the results of the bio physical sono im scheduled for on thursday to make the decision.

I had a scheduled c/s for different reasons but once they took my DD out they found the cord wrapped tightly around her neck.

There were never any complications from it and she is now 16 months and perfect (well to me anyway)

I didn't know before birth but my son had the cord around his neck. While I was pushing his heart rate kept dropping so they assumed it was that and they were right. It never dropped low enough to need a c-section. I had him vaginally. My son was fine. They took him quickly to make sure he was breathing ok and everything checked out fine and I got to hold him 5 minutes after birth. My DH didn't get to cut the cord while it was still attached to me because they cut it fast to take him away. They did let him cut the cord shorter while they were checking him out, so my DH didn't totally miss out on it.

I told my OBGYN that this was my biggest fear. She told me that it is so common and there are rarely any complications. It made me feel so much better, I hope you can relax with this - I know how scary it can be!!!!

I had a v-birth with my DD. The cord was looped around her neck 2x, she never went into distress. The OB just took it off when her head came out, no biggie.

My DS had the cord around his neck, but I didn't know before hand.

However, I also have a titled pelvis, and OMG the pain was insane. I pushed for 2 hours, but he couldn't come out because of the angle of my spine and pelvis or something like that. I had 2 epidurals, which didn't do $hit because it was all back labor. I ended up with a c-section, and that's when they found out about the cord being around the neck.

You're baby should be fine with the c-section..it's really risky to deliver vaginally with the cord issue. Plus all your other issues don't help.

I was dead set against c-sections, but once I was in the position I was in, I was begging for it LOL. It wasn't as bad as I thought, and I am looking forward to my next spinal LOL It took all the pain away in less than a minute

DD had the cord around her neck 2x. We knew from sonos as I was also monitored 2x weekly with NST/BPPs, but that was b/c DD was borderline IUGR (quite the opposite from you). I was induced at 40w and didn't need a section. DD's heartrate and O2 sat. were fine the whole time and Apgars were perfect! Good luck!

My BF had a cord around DS neck that she found out about at around 32 weeks bc he kept failing his NST. She had previous complications in a previous pregnancy and was considered high risk, hence the NS Tests. Anyway, her son was fine and is a perfecty healthy 6mo old little boy now. She was a wreck from the time she found out, but the Drs reassured her that if they thought it was an emergency that theyd deliver and the good news is that they know so they can monitor the baby and take all necessary precautions. I know it must be unbelievably nervewracking, but better that they know and can now ensure a safe delivery. Good luck!!

Totally had every issue imaginable with my first pregnancy! However we did not know about a cord issue. I went into labor turned out I had a tilted pelvis as well the baby was over 9lbs got stuck could not be delivered started to lose oxygen and pooped while delivering which made for a major emergency C-section ASAP. Anyway the epidural stopped working mid cut they knocked me out and when DS was delivered he had the cord issue and it turned out the cord was actually formed inside out and was kinked which was the cause of lack of oxygen. If we took any more time he probably would have been in serious trouble! Anyway even with all this drama-happy ending-he is PERFECT!!!!! So do not panic everything will work out but take it from a lady who has been through all the drama go with a scheduled C! After laboring for so long I was just weak, crabby, tired... and I truly think it weighed in on my recovery...I actually ended up in the hospital shortly after my being sent home with terrible abdominal pain and shock I was in for a week-probable septicemia... I am telling you save yourself the drama-I know next time around I am scheduling!
Best of luck to you and don't let them scare you my DS beat all odds for being a healthy kid! They scared me to death!

dd had the cord wrapped around her neck twice and i delivered her vaginally. it was a short labor - which was a good thing b/c her heart rate kept fluctuating as the cord was compressed when i moved, etc. she was fine though. they watched me very carefully b/c of the heart rate and blood in my water, but she was fine. her apgars were 0 and 0.

she was also 5 weeks early and my water had broke 3 days earlier, but i didn't realize it. she also came out facing to the left - that with the cord made pushing hard, but it worked and she's perfectly fine today!

thank you all so much for sharing all your stories i can not tell you how nice it is to have all you ladies "understand" what im going through!

i go in monday for a NST and then on thursday for another NST and a bio physical (they do not believe the size of the baby ) and then im assuming they will make the decison for a section or vaginal delivery.. im pretty set on having a section for my health and for the babys. so i guess we'll see! ill be sure to update!

not to scare you, but my friend's sister lost a baby during delivery because the cord was around her neck. they tried to do an emergency c-section, but they couldn't get the baby out in time. i wouldn't take the chance.
