What do you do for you LO's Eczema?
Ever since DS had a fever 3 weeks ago, he has had a rash, which looks like eczema. It must be itchy since he will scratch it. What do you do for your LO's eczema?
So far, I have switched detergents for everyone to free and clear. I bathe DS everyday, only soaping him up at the very end. I lather him up with aquaphor. I have also tried to keep his nails short. We have a well visit next week so I'll also be asking the dr for advice.

I think bathing every day might dry out his skin. We got baby Aveeno oatmeal bath packets and used those. They helped a lot. Maybe try bathing every other day. We also put Aquaphor on the red patches and got Baby eczema relief cream. The soaks helped. She would get it under her knees and elbows and sometimes side of the face and ankles.

A few drops of tea tree oil in DD's bath, mild unscented soap, and then rubbing on refined coconut oil at the end of her bath has been amazing for DD's skin. If it's bad the doctor can give you a steroid cream but I always try to avoid that.

Less bathing, and cerave PM is working very well. We had tried a number of other things and this seems to be the only thing working.

I use CeraVe baby in the morning if necessary and aquaphor at night. I give dd a bath every other day and on the other days she showers with me. I use California baby super sensitive soap on her and I use my hand not a wash cloth to wash the majority of her body. The rubbing from the wash cloth seemed to make it worse on the backs of her arms and legs.

Thanks! I literally just started bathing him every day on Saturday so I guess I will cut back to every other day again. I thought I had read every day was better.
I am going to try some of the other stuff mentioned since the aquaphor is not helping at all.

Agree with PP to not bathe him everyday - it actually dries out the skin more. Also, make sure the water isn't too hot. We use oatmeal in his baths (Aveno) and then my ped suggested I use CeraVe - which has been helping a lot. We are using the one with the blue label.

I use the lotion... and i had heard that aquaphor is good too, so I might try what a pp said she does and alternate, use one at night and one in the morning.

Jess - what is the consistency of the lotion? Aquaphor is like Vaseline so I usually lather him up really well at night and then just apply a little in the am as I don't want him being a gross, oily mess all day.

Baths every other day or even every 3 days until his skin clears up. The only thing that ever worked on DS's skin is Aveeno Baby Moisturizer for Eczema. Also, they make an oatmeal bath, too.

Re: What do you do for you LO's Eczema?
My DD suffers from eczema and dry scalp. We saw Dr Krystal who is a ped dermatologist who is amazing. He has me bathe her every night using Aquaphor wash. Then we use CeraVe cream to moisturize her..its in a tub. He told us not to put Aquaphor on it because it contains lanolin which can aggrevate severe eczema. No wash cloths or bath sponges they just aggrevate the skin and when you dry baby, pat them dry don't rub the patches with a towel. We have beeen doing this method since she is 4 months old and her eczema is in check. Good Luck...

I use the lotion. It is on the thin side and absorbs pretty quickly.

Re: What do you do for you LO's Eczema?
My DS has horrible eczema behind his knees & very dry skin otherwise. I use hydrocortisone 1% cream once a day behind his knees. Also Aveeno oatmeal packets in his bath. And I've tried multiple eczema moisturizing lotions, like Cetaphil. I have to say none of the above have cleared it up completely ever. But they do help.

crashing----my niece (she is 18months) has bad eczema and just started using Egyptian Magic, it is amazing. She got it at costco but you can get it online (amazon) it is 100% natural, its a blend of olive oil, beeswax, royal jelly and it is magical. I have psoriasis and it has even helped me. ha I sound like an ad but it really is good stuff.

Just FYI eczema is usually caused by gut issues NOT skin issues. Yes detergent could bother already irritated skin and creams may temporality relieve symptoms but the problem starts in the stomach.
Do you notice flair ups after a round of antibiotics? How is your DCs diet?
I would start with a daily high quality probiotic and see if that helps. If not I would look into dietary changes that would reduce inflammation in the body. Like the removal of gluten or dairy.
And to answer you question I make my own ezcema relief cream with Shea butter, coconut oil, vitamin e, lavender and tea tree oil. I would NOT ever put bleach in a bath tub for a child ever. I squirm thinking how horrible that would be for my dds itchy skin.

Re: What do you do for you LO's Eczema?
When dd was little we bathed every 3rd day and used cetaphil - no soap only her hair. Then lathered her in cerave and aquaphor on her face. We also had an rx that we used daily for 2 weeks when her skin was realllly bad.
We still use the same regimen at 2.5 and it really works!

Thanks everyone!
I used the aveeno oatmeal bath and lotion and his skin looks much better and he STTN! I honestly think the aquaphor was making it worse.
As for diet, he hadn't really had any new foods in months and he's been only bf since day 1; he'll be a year on Saturday. I think the flare up is linked to his high fever, ear infection, and antibiotics. I had been giving him yogurt everyday to counteract the antibiotic. In the future, I'll look into other probiotics as well.

Re: What do you do for you LO's Eczema?
I think the aquaphor made it worse on my son too. Bathing him once every 3 days has helped. My dr told me to only bathe him once a week but I feel like that isn't enough. I apply the Honest Co. healing balm once a day and that's gotten rid of it almost completely.
I hope nobody here tries the bleach in the water suggestion above. That is a terrible idea for so many reasons.
