what do contractions feel like?
I've gotten BH which are a painless tightening all over. Are contractions in the same spot, but painful? Or can they be anywhere?

They are different for everyone. Each pregnancy is different. With DS they were in my back. Its just a shooting pain and then it goes. At points it felt like pressure down there....

The only time I felt true contractions was after my doctor broke my water and started pitocin. They felt exactly like very severe menstrual cramps. I was expecting them to be totally different. I don't know if I am unusual but I only felt them very very low in my abdomen near my pubic bone area, basically where you'd normally get cramps. I was expecting to feel the "contraction" through my entire abdomen but that didn't happen. My back never hurt. I did quickly decide that they were intolerable enough to warrant an epidural (I had originally wanted to go drug free).
eta- This pregnancy I have tons of BH (I had them last time to but they were much less noticeable and I didn't realize what they were) and the contractions I had during labor were nothing like BH. I feel the BH all through my uterus.

Mine were in my lower stomach and that was the only place it felt like period cramps multiplied by 100 but only in that area. I was 8 cm dilated within 2 hours.
With my first pregnancy it was all over

mine started at the top of my belly and moved down like a wave to my lower abdomen. they were pitocin induced though.

Very, tense muscles in the lower abdominal muscles. For me, it was like terrible period cramps and food poisoning.
It's all worth it though

I never felt them until my water broke. And holy hell they hurt. But during all my NST they said I was having them.

Same with me. It felt like a knife was being twisted in my lower back. Never felt it in the front like I thought I would.

I had BH and always thought I'd get confused with contractions. The way I knew that they were definitely contractions is that they had a clear beginning and ending. BH never did (at least for me). It was so clear to time them, that I knew immediately what they were. They weren't too painful at first, almost like period cramps. They got worse as the day went on.

this is what i was told...
when i told the nurse i have been having period cramps on and off she said welcome to contractions..mild ones but yes contractions and when i was hooked up t the monitor she was right!

mine felt like consistent period cramps in the beginning and got more painful as time went on.

First I felt like I had to poop, then I did  . Right after that I tried to lay down again and couldn't. It was just so uncomfortable then my water broke and they first felt like really bad period cramps that came and went 3-5 minutes apart right away.

Everyone is different, but I think the food poisoning description is pretty close to what it felt like for me. I could not stand up straight, talk, and I also threw up. There is no mistaking them!

same here. so many people told me it would feel like bad period cramps... that when i was actually contracting/in labor, i was in denial and just thought i had a terrible, terrible stomachache.
