It's so hard!!!! I hate lying to people, but we're obviously not ready to tell yet!

I've been playing the "January Detox" card a lot! I wonder what I'll do for February???

Re: What are your 'not drinking' excuses?

Before everyone knew, my cousin had a b-day party in a club with an open bar. Could you imagine how uncomfortable that was? So, I filled my glass with cranberry juice & lots of ice to make it look like I was drinking vodka/cranberry Chat Icon

Other excuses I could have used was that I was on medication or I drank wayyyyyy too much the week before & would puke at the sight of another alcoholic drink. The trick is to be creative Chat Icon

Re: What are your 'not drinking' excuses?

i was drinking cranberry and seltzer and non-alcoholic beer before anyone knew. now a couple of people know but we will tell more people on friday, so it won't be as hard to hide it. it's difficult b/c there's a local bar that we spend a lot of time at with our friends, and i've sort of been MIA for the past few weeks, which i am sure is supicious but i don't care. it's for a good cause Chat Icon

I drank cranberry and soda...it worked great!! The trick is to have them see you "drink" at least one during the night. You can even nurse a beer all night. I found that was better than making up tons of excuses!

I used the "urinary tract infection", didn't work so well. So, I started having "specialty cocktails"- cranberry juice, pineapple juice, and seltzer. I told people it was a baybreeze. That worked much better, just talk to the bartender if you go out.

I used the "I drank too much last weekend" excuse before we told.

Unfortunately, we see the same people pretty often - so they KNOW I didn't drink too much last weekend! Chat Icon

The first night, DH got me cranberry juice, but didn't have any soda put in it, so I think it was pretty obvious it was cranberry juice.

I have been having half a glass here and there and DH drinks a few gulps when no one is watching...Chat Icon

Re: What are your 'not drinking' excuses?

i was never a huge drinker like maybe one or two when we went out tops... and thats if i was in the mood so it never really was a problem. And we wound up telling our immediate friends when we found out at 4 weeks so i didn't have to lie too much

Re: What are your 'not drinking' excuses?

This was the reason we told the families when we did. I told DH "we can skip your sister's party this Sat OR we can spill the beans...but they will not believe ANY excuses for me not drinking" so he said let's just go and tell them. After a trip to New Orleans earlier in the year where we all discovered the beauty of Hand Grenades, SIL smuggled a case of Everclear into NY and ordered Hand Grenade mix so she throws these parties...I am known not to be able to turn down an authentic Burbon St. Hand Grenade, so we had to tell them the baby news. me too Chat Icon

I'm screwed anyway.... I can't hide it. Before I even got pregnant, my FIL declared at the christmas dinner table that's he's watching me. He said as soon as I stop drinking he'll know I'm pregnant! Chat Icon

so, the next time we're eating together, I have to tell them... or else they'll just come out and ask me Chat Icon I WAS going to use the antibiotic excuse, since it's winter and everyone seems to be sick....

Re: What are your 'not drinking' excuses?

Besides all those listed above

I am the designated driver

I have it easy cause I lost a good friend to DWI back in HS and am a total wench about not drinking and driving since then. Also I was hit by a DWI New Years day 2007.

So hubby drinks to his delight and I don't. If I have to have a drink I fake it or say I'm full or taking ALLERGY MEDS!!!

You can't drink on allergy meds but you don't have to be 'sick' so its an easy excuse.

ETA: also I told some folks that we were thinking of ... and I quote... "Planning on planning to have kids soon" so I was testing the water of not drinking. hahaha

Nice!

I am a big drinker too. This is how many of my friends found out. We were playing poker at a friends house one night and she noticed I did not have any drinks & was like, "what are you knocked up?"

Ugh - We have a party Sat night and I was just thinking about what I am going to tell people!

I may have to "milk" a beer all night, (and then feed it to DH when no one's looking) because these people will not take no for an answer! Chat Icon

I used these too. I was a lush, so I didn't think my friends would believe me. Other times, I would walk around with a wine or beer, pretend to take sips and switch with DH when he emptied or got towards the bottom of his glass/bottle. He got very drunk during those nights! Chat Icon
