excuses for not drinking
I hate that my job requires alcohol and dinners! We are all going out tonight to celebrate the end of the fiscal year. I just told my friend that I am on medication and don't want to go. But everybody is going even my bosses, and some people are going to all ask me why I am not drinking. I am only 4-5 weeks! I always drink when I go out.
Was anyone else in this situation? What did you do?

That is good, but I can't say that EVERY time! I will become obvious. We have something every two weeks or so.

order cranberry juice or ODouls and ask for it in a glass and nurse it or say that you are on medication and can't drink

Can you say you are training for a big run or something? I might say I am in training and work out early in the mornings and drinking at night has been affecting my performance so I am just laying off temporarily.

To be honest, if you really don't want anyone asking questions or starting whispers order something that looks like a drink and nurse it.
The medication thing never works.

Re: excuses for not drinking
This happened with me! OK, here's the trick - corner the waitress or bartender (write a small note to slip to bartender if need be). Ask him to make you a seltzer with cranberry juice and put a lime in it. Tell people you are drinking a vodka tonic with a splash of cranberry. If someone gets the drink for you just say something like "Oh I need another lime" go to the bar, wink at your bartender buddy and he will fix it for you. This worked for me for 3 big business trips where I "partied" with all beer guzzling men for about 20 days on the road. Works like a charm!

Re: excuses for not drinking
thanks girls.
They all know that I usually just drink wine, and sometimes a beer.
I am a HORRIBLE lier! I just told my friend here that I have a bladder infection and can't drink and I am on antibiotics. he said how do you get that? I said that I dodn't know!
Now I jsut heard that my group is not going tonight and I just wasted that good excuse for nothing!!

Re: excuses for not drinking
I had moments when I would order a regular drink, have a glass of wine or a beer in my hand and just not drink it. Fake it. If you are all socializing at a bar, you could even take it into the bathroom and pour some out occasionally to make it look like you are drinking!

Re: excuses for not drinking
Can you get there in advance and order a drink to have in hand? Maybe a pelligrino with a lime - you could say it's gin & tonic.

Re: excuses for not drinking
when I was younger it was discovered I had elevated liver enzymes. I was told to stay away from alcohol for 6 months to a year. So you could always use that as an excuse. Say you went for your yearly checkup and the doctor adviced you not to drink for a few months.

Re: excuses for not drinking
While it is a legitimate excuse, the antibiotic story doesn't really fly because people immediately assume you are pregnant.
If you really want to keep your pregnancy a secret you need to order a drink, keep bringing it up to your lips and pretend you are drinking. Don't be afraid to be seen doing it! Obviously, you will not be swallowing anything, just looking like you do, KWIM?
I did it all the time with both my pregnancies. It's a good move to master if you are not ready to reveal but go to a lot of social or family (especially family ) functions where people will be wondering.

Re: excuses for not drinking
I had a wedding I had to go to right after I found out I was pregnant. The whole night I ordered seltzer with a lime so it looked like I was drinking my regular Vodka tonics.

Re: excuses for not drinking
I just recently went through this but with a good group of friends. We were away all together and I wasn't drinking. I used the antibiotics line but they didn't take it. They haunted me for two days and then I gave in and told them. So I m8ust be a really bad lier too.

Re: excuses for not drinking
I got away with it with friends who know i would usually drink by getting cranberry juice instead of cranberry & vodka........if you usually drink wine its a bit tougher, what about grape juice? or you could be designated driver? or detoxing from a bad night the night before

Re: excuses for not drinking
I went to a wedding when I was hiding my pregnancy and ordered a bud light (it's a dark bottle) and just kept bringing it to my lips and pretending i was drinking. Nobody could really see that the beer was still full.
