All of these drive me nuts, but I particularly despise "could of/should of" and adding an apostrophe to make a word plural.

Re: What are your grammar peeves?

Another spelling one, but "Awe" instead of "Awwww" drives me nuts.
And "walla" instead of "voila" Chat Icon

The aposotrophe thing makes me crazy too. This morning on the way to work I saw a sign that said "Tree's and Shrub's for sale". Chat Icon

Re: What are your grammar peeves?

I don't really get bothered when I see things written wrong only because this is definitely not my best subject (grammer), however I hate when people type to their friends (whether instant messaging or text message or whatever) slang. Ex: dat, cuz, "u r", wit, ya, etc. I just feel that the next generation is just doing this way too much now and then they end up talking that way. I don't know why but it bothers me!

"spade-ed" instead of spayed.

My friend insists it's "spade-ed" and it drives me nuts.

Re: What are your grammar peeves?

I hate when people end a sentence with 'I'. For example:

He gave the picture to DH and I.

It should be:

He gave the picture to DH and me.

That one drives me nuts!!

Re: What are your grammar peeves?

I have spelling peeves not grammar so much.

The incorrect spelling of ridiculous as "rediculous" is the most annoying and I have noticed that many teachers spell it wrong.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: What are your grammar peeves?

As the daughter of an english teacher, I have a million grammar pet peeves. Where to start? (BTW, I'm pretty forgiving on BBs b/c half the time we're not paying close attention -- However, in any formal or business situation, I think they're unacceptable)

A partial list:

"A lot" is TWO words. Alittle isn't one word, so why would alot be?

You couldN'T care less. If you could care less, then you DO care - at least a little. Chat Icon

Ending sentences with prepositions -- in formal correspondence only. This doesn't bother me on BBs or in conversation, but annoys me to no end in formal or business correspondence.

Misusing "who" and "whom"

Misusing "that" and "which"

Not using the serial comma. (Oh, this one gets me!)

Putting punctuation before an open parenthesis.

Irregardless is not a word, but it is a restaurant in NC. Also, even if it were a word, it would mean the exact opposite of what most people are trying to communicate.

Possessive: boy's
Plural: boys
Plurarl possessive: boys'

"could of" "would of" etc.

And possibly my biggest of all: Misusing "I" and "Me." Me is an object. You give something to me. You give something to me and my FH. You do not give something to my FH and I.

Not technically a Grammar issue, but I don't like when people say:

"Quote On Quote"

When it's "Quote Unquote"

What bugs me even more is when they WRITE "Quote On Quote". If you are writing it, you actually PUT it in quotes.

Example:

Tomorrow we are going to a quote on quote "celebration" for my MIL.

Ha! I see what you mean!

I dont really care too much but I guess the lazy grammar annoys me like "u r" instead of "you are" and things like that.

I HATE when people say irregardless and conversating instead of conversing. It always cracks me up because they are using it to try to sound more intelligent, but they really sound retarded!

I also hate double negatives like:
I don't want no homework.
Well, if you don't want no homework, then I guess you want some homework, right?
(I am an English teacher and use this all the time!)

Hands down, it's the double negative. Several times a week I hear a co-worker say things like "he didn't say nothing to me...." Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: What are your grammar peeves?

ARE instead of OUR

"We are going to are grandparent's house"

And I hate when people try to sound proper and misuse the "me" and "I". Rule of thumb- If the sentence did not have the other person's name in it and you would use "me" then you STILL USE ME.

I can not stand when people misuse "I" and "me" ~ they say "between you and I" and think they sound all fancy. Actually, no, it's "between you and me!" Chat Icon
