What allergy med works for you?
I tried the new OTC one- Xyzal and to be honest it wasn't great for me. My allergies are starting to kick up like they always do at this time of year and I think I need to try something different. Which one works best for you?

What allergy med works for you?
The only thing that ever gives me some kind of relief is Nasonex or Flonase. Both have worked well for me.

Re: What allergy med works for you?
I take Singulair (it's a prescription)
I also like Alavert which is OTC, but a 90-day supply of Singulair costs me less than a pack of Alavert.

What allergy med works for you?
This year I finally figured out what works for me is to do Flonase PLUS a pill like Claritin or Zyrtec.

Re: What allergy med works for you?
For those that use Flonase... you use it every day right? Not just when having an allergy attack? I hear it needs to build up in your system?

I think Alavert is one of the only OTC's I haven't tried. I tried Allegra and it sucked for me. I might try Alavert

What allergy med works for you?
I have horrible allergies.
In the morning I take Flonase.
In the evening - I take Xyzal, Singulair, and Patanase Nasal Spray.
I need to start allergy shots but, my doctor just went out of network...

This exactly! I need both But I use the "d" version of the meds - either Zyrtec-D or Allegra-D

You need to use it everyday bc it builds up to block the allergies in the air that bother you. A spray along with allergy meds should work best.

I use Nasonex spray everyday of the year along with taking Zyrtec everyday. I have used Xyal when it was prescription only , it was fine but no better than others for me. Zyrtec is what I usually buy, but I will get claritan or allegra if they happen to be on sale that month.

Re: What allergy med works for you?
Thanks all I have really been suffering lately. I am fine in the spring with all that yellow pollen around. But late summer to late fall- forget it. Awful Sometimes if it's bad at night I will take benedryl- that really works but makes me tired so i can't use it in the day
I am going to have to be more diligent about using the flonase. I HATE nasal sprays and spraying anything up my nose, but if it helps I suck it up and deal
I am going to try using it daily and maybe switch my pill too

I also hate nasal sprays, but Flonase wasn't too bad. During the spring I started using it on April because I usually get bad allergies in May. I also took Zyrtec daily and I didn't have allergies at all las spring.

I haven't tried it, but Flonase now has the "sensa-mist" version which supposedly isn't 'as assaulting' as a regular nose spray. I guess less force. So if you hate using nose sprays due to that, maybe try out with that version until you get used to it.
I haven't tried it, as of course it is more expensive (different bottle design.)

Re: What allergy med works for you?
Do you have any one in your local area (within 10 to 15 miles) that raises bees for their honey? My husband had terrible allergies, but once he took 1 tbsp. Of local honey they disappeared. He does it before every allergy season. My FIL did 50 years of allergy shots to hell him and then tried the honey and it worked for him too. You just need to find as local as you can to your home, local honey.

Re: What allergy med works for you?
I hate the nose stuff.. Just can't do it.
Claritin D works for me but only the 12hr. Ironic, I know. But the 24 does NOTHING for me. Well it works for like 8hours then nothing and I'm stuck suffering and unable to take anything else. Usually it kicks in about half an hour into an attack if it's desperate. Otherwise you can take it daily.
AJ has bad allergies here in TX but not up in NY for me NY was a chest allergy with cough and sneeze that was half drying and draining all at the same time along with itchy eyes and cheeks.
TX I only get occasional flares but rare. She gets every day sniffles and sneezes, itchy nose and flares for her are eyes.
She has to take a daily dose of allergy meds and we've doing it since she was about a year old. What we learned was to switch it up. NOTHING works forever. Your body grows a tolerance to anything. What didn't work today may work later. There really is a difference in batches. She's been through Claritin, Zyrtec and Allerga. Benedryl is the only constant. Generics are all just fine. The magic period is 6months. We prefer 4months so that if she has meds left we just go until its done and switch.
Oh and damn it.. they should give samples of all allergy meds!

Zyrtec
Second Zyrtec... our house survives on it. My DH has had bad allergies lately and he never really has allergies fits.

Re: What allergy med works for you?
I agree that the nasal sprays are most effective. I like budesonide (not sure what he brand name is - been taking the generic for years!)

Re: What allergy med works for you?
I take Zyrtec and Flonase. I agree the nasal spray works the best. Zyrtec makes me drowsy, so I take it at night. It's not supposed to, but for me - it's like taking a sleeping pill.
