weird or not weird
One of my coworkers has a quote from the Dalai Lama in her email signature (below her name, title, phone number, etc). The only thing I've ever seen in anyone's email signature here other than their info is a disclaimer saying that if you think you got the email in error to notify the sender and delete the email.
So - weird or not weird to have a random quote in a professional email signature?

Re: weird or not weird
I vote weird, but I guess it depends on the type of business you are in. I work in a conservative environment, the firm creates our e-mail signatures, so having a quote in there wouldn't fly at my job.

Re: weird or not weird
Everyone in my office has a certain quote under our signatures. It's a quote my boss made up, not from a celebrity.

At a previous firm people did this all the time. Not management, but others. I thought it was unprofessional.

Depends on quote I guess. But I would say most likely unprofessional.

Re: weird or not weird
An IT vendor we use does this, but its his own business so he can do what he wants. It's not really unprofessional, unless the sentiment it could deter potential customers. Then it is the business owner's choice-he may feel that if anyone is turned off by his quote, he doesn't want to do business with them anyway.
When you work fora larger company, I find it i appropriate, because everything in your email should convey the company brand (sometimes even down to the font & color you use.). So, unless you are quoting the founder of your company, it is probably unprofessional.
I also see professors do this--that is a little different, b/c they are scholars & researchers with a very distinct point of view & their quotes convey that. They are sort of selling their own brand at all times. Universities will hire them, journals will publish them, etc, based on who they are & what they represent.

I'm not a fan. I see it at work from time to time, even "professional" or "motivational" quotes. I think they're kinda tacky.

Not weird, but I also work for a nonprofit, so lots of people have motivational quotes under their signatures given the nature of our office.

I work for a non-profit law firm. I don't want to say the quote in case she googles it or something one day and the post comes up in the search.
I'm glad I am not crazy in thinking it might be unprofessional!

I find it extremely unprofessional. A lot of people at my job have quotes under their signature...9 years later I will still roll my eyes whenever I receive an email from them.

Re: weird or not weird
Depends on the quote and if it applies to the business or teamwork or something like that. I have a few coworkers who have signatures with quotes, but they are work related. I think thats fine.

Extremely weird. We need to have our signatures in a particular font, size, order and color. Now that I think about it, that might be even weirder!

Completely depends on th industry- I think it's more common and acceptable in the non-profit world.

Same here. Actually, our whole e-mail needs to use a proper font, size, and color.
I think a quote in a business signature is unprofessional, unless it pertains to the actual business.

That's just it. In healthcare, I actually find it comforting if a practitioner has a caring, motivating quote.
