Everything separate. Maybe a kid put them away??
Now, something I find strange is that my MIL organizes the utensils in the dishwasher. That's a little OCD to me.
I do this too!! My family thinks I am nuts, but it really makes putting the clean dishes away so much easier.

We never organize it due to laziness because we keep our silverware in an unorganized location above our head(so kids can't get it). So if it were my DH he would probably forget that most people organize utensils and just throw it in there.
When our utensils were in a proper drawer with organizer it was separate. Miss those days
Couldn't you just put a kid's lock on the drawer?
You would think so but my kids have foiled all the locks we tried and still get their determined little fingers in there so we gave up.

Weird (and really not very important) silverware drawer question
I couldn't keep sharp knives in any drawers when my kids were smaller as the kids kept getting them for projects, so I had to hide them. My DD knew where everything in the house was, so that was not an easy task. If I couldn't find something, she always could tell me where to find it. I never knew how she managed.
We also had to hide sponges, hand towels and pot holders because we had a cat who would make off with them if he could nab them.
