Weird (and really not very important) silverware drawer question

If you have one of those trays that has separate compartments for your silverware -like one compartment for forks, one for knives, one for spoons etc., do you actually use the compartments that way? All of my life, that's the way it's always been.

I ask because recently we were away and while we were gone, friends (2 married couples) stayed at our house - which I was fine with. But when we came back, they had obviously used dishes, silverware etc, run the dishwasher and then put everything from the dishwasher away - all good, except that in the silverware tray, everything was all mixed together - knives, spoons, forks in each compartment. Clearly not a big deal, but I just find it so odd that they would do that (I mean, they had to take them out of the drawer and see that they were each in their own separate compartment, right?!?!). So, it just made me wonder if most people actually use the compartments to separate the type of silverware or do most people just have a silverware free for all? lol

Yes we always separate the types of utensils. Isn't that the point of those dividers? Chat Icon

Plus I wouldn't want to have to dig around and touch four spoons to get to a buried fork, kwim?

Exactly - I just found it to be so strange Chat Icon . Everything else in the house was in perfect order, so it really wasn't a big deal at all, but as I was emptying the dishwasher just now, I couldn't help think about it again

Re: Weird (and really not very important) silverware drawer question

Everything separate. Maybe a kid put them away??

Now, something I find strange is that my MIL organizes the utensils in the dishwasher. That's a little OCD to me.

That would make me nuts! Yes, always separated.

I will say, anytime we rent a vacation house they're all mixed up. Maybe organizing silverware while on vacation is just too much for people?

See I'm always careful not to put like utensils together bc they'll nest and not get clean. Otherwise I would totally separate them since it would make putting them away easier.

Nope - no kids were in the house, just adults. And I totally agree with the above poster - can't organize the silverware int he dishwasher, otherwise they literally spoon and won't get clean!

Everything separate. Each type has its own section. I vary what is in the dishwasher or else things don't get clean.

I keep everything separated and have an organization system for everything in my kitchen drawers. I would twitch if things were all in there willy nilly. Chat Icon

OMG I had such a knee jerk reaction when you said they mixed the silverware- this is NOT normal human behavior!!! I DO try to organize the dishwasher the same way but never succeed. Stupid family I live with won't go with it haha.

This. We just redid our kitchen last year and I made damn sure I got one of those drawers.

Definitely separate. Even DC put them in the correct area when they put the dishes away.

Re: Weird (and really not very important) silverware drawer question

We never organize it due to laziness because we keep our silverware in an unorganized location above our head(so kids can't get it). So if it were my DH he would probably forget that most people organize utensils and just throw it in there.

When our utensils were in a proper drawer with organizer it was separate. Miss those days Chat Icon

If you do it that way, you don't need to separate them out afterwards because they are already separated and can you place them right into their section.

Yep, separated in the drawer and separated in the dishwasher as it is easier to just grab them and put them away.

Couldn't you just put a kid's lock on the drawer?
