Weening yourself off of plastic wrap

for anyone who has for environmentla reasons, how did you do it?

is brown bagging the only solution to ziplock bags...what about freezing stuff.

I was standing in the homegoods section of the supermarket for 10 minutes trying to figure something out and they didn't realy have anything.

suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: Weening yourself off of plastic wrap

you could get the ziplocks and re-use them. Rinse, dry, fold and use the next time. :)

Or use plastic or glass containers with fitted lids.

Re: Weening yourself off of plastic wrap

why not pack your lunch in containers, that was you won't throw anything away, just wash and dry for the next day. I think that would be even better than a brown bag

Re: Weening yourself off of plastic wrap

I use gladware, but I don't throw it away I re-use it basically forever.

it's not goo to micro anything in plastic though, so when I'm home I use pyrex and corningware

Re: Weening yourself off of plastic wrap

We use plastic containers and reuse them forever. I don't remember the last time I used plastic wrap.

they don't get all funky and cross.

I worry about water getting into the creases or it not airing out properly. Chat Icon

oh, and to freeze raw meat...would you reuse a ziploc that you froze/defrosted raw meat in?

Kerry, we use left over chinese food containers for most things...but for a sandwich?? I don't know....

This is what I do. The girls at work laugh at me because whenever we order out and get tupperware with lids, I get all excited.

I currently have at least 20 with matching lids at home. I figure, the restaurants are going to use them anway. I'm doing the "reuse" portion of reduce-reuse-recycle.

I have to look at the bottom of those for the 1 or 2 symbol in the recycle triangle. If they are recyclable too, that would be a total bonus.

Also when microwaving, I have a plastic lid that fits over all my bowls and plates instead of covering it with plastic wrap.

I don't use the micro, so that is a plus.

I guess my main concern is freezing meats. I usually use freezer bags.

and the nutella sandwich I send my dh to work with every day. Chat Icon

Re: Weening yourself off of plastic wrap

they actually make the gladwhere sandwich shaped containers. I actually picked up a few at the dollar store (no name brand). They work great. I'm too cheap to keep buying baggies

Re: Weening yourself off of plastic wrap

If the only plastic baggies you aren't reusing are the ones you use to freeze raw meat, then I'd say you're totally doing your part. (I'd not resue plastic bags that held raw meat.)

You CAN freeze raw meat in resealable tupperware or gladware that is freezer safe and then wash it in the dishwasher between uses.

ETA - Just make sure it's dishwasher safe -- though I think most are now!

Re: Weening yourself off of plastic wrap

I use tupperware for almost everything including freezing meat.

It's dishwasher safe so I'm not concerned about it getting clean.

I try use washable containers where ever possible.

I will reuse ziplocs if they held something dry like cereal or pretzels. I have "set" of ziploc freezer bags I use & reuse for frozen meats. I repackage the meat into aluminum foil and store in the ziploc to protect against freezer burn. Food does not touch the ziploc so I do reuse those.

My kids have those!!! And they love them!

I freeze meat in the wrap it comes in usually. I don't really buy large quanties that need to be frozen - and I rarely freeze anything for longer than a week because I am a weirdo. BUT.. you can buy a vacuum seal container kit that will suck the air out of the reuseable plastic containers.. that should guard well against freezer burn!

FH uses that to bring his pb&j to work! He must look like such a tool! But it saves us money in Ziplocs and plastic baggies...

here is my dilema (and where I will probably outweird you)

I am not a big fan of freezing food. but we do lead a halfie kinda fly by the seat of your pants life right now in that cooking meat that is in the fridge can get pushed off for a few days and then I am afraid to make it.

so I throw it in the freezer,,,and then on the day I want to make chicken, I forget to take it out. so I have to go to the supermarket anyway to buy chicken even though I have some in the freezer.

and then it stays in the freezer. until I look around and remember it again...and then I am afraid to eat it. b/c I am convinced it has freezer burn.

I am a disaster.Chat Icon

I use Rubermaid Stainproof for everything. Instead of packing sandwhiches or chips in plasitic bags I use these. They really are stainproof too- you can have chili in them and they stay clean.

ETA: For those afraid of freezer burn I've never had an issue with the rubbermaid or the glass pyrex.

You can defrost meat (especially boneless chicken) in a bowl of water in about 15-20 minutes. I almost never remember to take it out of the freezer beforehand.
