web editing career
I've been in higher ed for over 20 years and I want to transition out b/c the pay is so low. I was a web editor when I first started, but I really only know the basics (HTML). Things have changed a LOT in the 20 years since I had that job and I'm thinking of getting back into it.
What would you recommend I need to learn (besides Javascript) to be competitive in today's market?

I don't have a ton of knowledge, but I'm kinda in the same field. I've transitioned to the marketing side though. I work with a lot of small businesses. Almost every website I'm asked to analyze these days is CSS. I see a lot of companies changing over to a CMS like wordpress because websites have to be responsive (mobile friendly) and it's the easiest/cheapest way to make sure the website is staying up-to-date (without repeatedly paying a developer). Obviously large companies that have the budget don't worry about that. Also, social media integration is very important.

Holy crow this is what I do for a living (I am a web content editor)
You definitely need to know how to build pages with a CMS like Drupal or Joomla or WordPress. Most places won't even look at you if you don't.
HTML and coding, also tables and style sheets and forms
Javascript and Adobe Flash and PS (really the whole suite)
Analytics like Google Analytics and SEO
And it goes without saying you need to be able to write/proofread/copyedit, etc

Thanks for the info! Do you know if it'll be hard to get jobs in the field since I don't have current experience? I plan on getting official certifications so I can add them to my resume, but there won't be any recent real world experience.

It will probably will be hard without any experience, but that's for any career. You'll be starting at the bottom. There's a wide range of web-based careers. I would check out Indeed and Glassdoor and Zip Recruiter to see what jobs are available in your area and get a feel for what the job requirements are before you put all your eggs in one basket.
