we think we like a house...
Hey Ladies,
I need advice. My husband and I are searching for our first home. After many months of frustrating searching we found a home that has just about everything that we are looking for. The only catch is that the back yard is adjacent to the back of an elementary school yard! We can't decide if this is a deal breaker for us or not? What do you think? Anyone here live near or on a school yard?

For me, yes that would be a deal breaker. I would not want to live next to a school, rail road tracks, mall, parking lot, industrial area, main or even secondary roads.

It's not a deal breaker for me. As long as you don't mind the sound of screaming, playing kids coming through your window.
The only downside is that you may get teenagers partying there at night, but honestly, that wouldn't really bother me either. I only mention it because the school yard up the block from where I grew up was a major hangout for the teenagers in the neighborhood and the neighbors were always calling the cops. So clearly it bothered them.

To me that is almost a selling point, you never know what kind of neighbors you could get behind you. At least you know what you are getting and if there is a problem it can be handled without someone taking it personally.

we looked at house like this in KP... we decided to not go for it, we felt it would be to easy of an escape for burglaries... HTH

Deal breaker for me. I wouldn't want to live anywhere near a school. At least not within 5 blocks or so.

Definite deal breaker for us. I would not want to live so close to a school. Not only will you hear the kids during recess, but the fields will most likely be used during the weekends for sports.

Not a deal breaker for me at all. If the yard is large enough to maybe add some privacy bushes etc.
I like living close to the schools. I like that my kids can walk to school, I like that we can walk up there to play when we need a change of scenery, etc...
ETA: One thing to think about the bus travel in the AM/PM....would they pass by your house? The bus traffic does pass by our home 2x a day but it really doesnt bother me now that I am used to it. WHen I first had DS it was annoying, but now I swear DS sleeps better when school is in session and the buses pass by our house than the summer when its quiet!

If i were working it would be ok, but I"m a SAHM and home all day. I would not want to hear kids during the day and busses in teh AM and afternoon
