Re: "We are in agreeance"

Most of us do not write/speak here the way we do in person or professionally. I think we are all aware of that.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and speak as an educator. Educators are often first in the line of fire when test scores do not come back the way parents and administrators hope they will. I know so many teachers (both in and out of my specific field of special education) who work their tails off to make sure their students are exposed to proper grammar and spelling. We cannot always count on mastery of those areas but we do our best and pray that our work in school is supported at home. When I get a note from a parent that says "Please excuse Johnny. He "incompleted" his homework," my heart sinks into my stomach and I feel a sense of despair. It forces me to work twice as hard. It has to be a team effort or the cycle won't end. We have to help kids when they are young.

When the parents of my students ask me how to help their children with reading and writing, I give my standard answer. Expose your children to literature by allowing them to read to you and you to them. Listen to books on tape. Read the newspaper. Make it a game. They will pick it up in time and remember everyone learns at a different rate. It is also OK not to know the answers, thats why we are here to support each other. I surely do not have the answer to everything and I tell that to my kids all the time.

It saddens me to think that many people just don't care or think it is important. It is important.

Rant over.

Re: "We are in agreeance"

Here's my list of peeves:

Should of
Could of
Would of
ur instead of YOUR
Valentime's day (as prev. mentioned)
"I did good." instead of using WELL
misuse of adjectives - I walked slowLY, not I walked SLOW.

My list goes on and on...

I'll never forget a few years back when I was going for my English 7-12 certification. I took one of THE best classes in grammar taught by an "off the boat" Russian woman. It was EMBARASSING how well she knew OUR language. People were clueless as she spoke about gerunds, dangling participles, prepositional phrases, etc. and I for one was mortified. I'm a grammar nerd so of course I got an A in the class, but still... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: "We are in agreeance"

Eh some stuff doesn't really bother me on here. And other stuff does. The stuff that does bother me is:

using wrong homophones and simple grammar stuff. I don't know how many times I have seen "I got my breaks fixed yesterday".

Wrong use of apostrophes gets to me b/c I see the same people doing the same mistakes.

Could of, would of, should of, had to of... eh doesn't bother me too much, I am sure that person knows the rule; it is just a mistake. They hear it that way (you got to love the schwa!).

Incorrect use of the past simple vs. the present perfect, that gets to me. I don't know why but it does.

I deal with ESL learners all day. I've seen worse mistakes. I believe the bottom line is they can communicate. If they are always concentrating on how perfect their grammar is they will never open their mouth to speak. I don't want that.

I don't speak perfectly & when I'm here this is fun time so I could care less if people including myself make mistakes. I usually assume its more of a typo than the person not actually knowing the word. I can always figure out what they mean anyway. I didn't even know there was a spellcheck here till a couple of months ago & honestly I rarely use it...as most of you probably notice.
There are other things that annoy me much more than spelling & grammar. plus I worked with a gal for many years that made up her own words & we loved her for entertaining us, so when I see made up words here, I just laugh.

agree here!!!

seriously who cares!!!!!! This is a forum not a classroom. Some of the smartest people in the world cant spell!!!

Can I join the grammar police? I constantly see people writing things like: What do you think of my menu's? And it drives me crazyyy!

Oh yes, all are welcome.Chat Icon

I find it so ironic that, as a society, we are writing more than ever, and yet our grammatical skills are diminishing at a great rate. Chat Icon

I consult in schools, and my favorite is when the middle school teacher has to explain to her class that the following words should NEVER be used in a composition:

LOL
BFF
BTW

you get the gyst. She went into depth that text and aol lanuguage is not proper writing language...

I shudder for our future....

I totally agree with this! This is part of the reason why I don't like September because we have to re-train the students not to use the text messaging lingo.
