I find it so ironic that, as a society, we are writing more than ever, and yet our grammatical skills are diminishing at a great rate.

I consult in schools, and my favorite is when the middle school teacher has to explain to her class that the following words should NEVER be used in a composition:
LOL
BFF
BTW
you get the gyst. She went into depth that text and aol lanuguage is not proper writing language...
I shudder for our future....

I will say though, as a Middle School English teacher, that the text language is GREAT for kids when they have to take notes during the ELA! They can take a lot more notes, and it's almost fun for them to do so if they're doing it in their own lauguage.
Although, I also have to remind them that they are only to be used for notes - not formal writing!
