Was just run off the road by a car
I was on a back road and I suddenly saw a car behind me flashing its headlights and speeding up behind me. I kept driving along with the other cars in front of me. He suddenly was flashing a blue light on his dashbaord, as if a volunteer firefighter. Although I know you don't have to pull over for them, I try to if I can safely. But the road I was on has no shoulder.
He suddenly crossed the double yellow line, but only partially, so he stayed mainly in my lane, right next to me. ANother car was coming in the opposite direction. This mother flucker then swerved into me and I screamed. I don't know how he missed us, but I went right off the road into the woods. As I luckily came to a stop, I saw him run 3 more off the road and into the woods.
I truly don't believe he was a volunteer firefighter, but even is he was, how dare he!!!!!! My son was in the car with me. So flipping mad!

I would call the local FD or the police even! That blue light is for COURTESY, they are not police and CANNOT break the law!

I didn't. I didn't get a make/model or license plate. He came up so fast behind me and all I could think about was getting away from him. WHen I passed the firehouse (just up the road from there) there was no lights or sirens anywhere and no sign of that car. If there was, I would've gotten more info and definately taken action. (After he fought the fire first of course! )
It was right off of rte 21, near 25 in mid suffolk.

Seriously !! I had something similiar happen to me , but the guy was driving a huge truck ! I saw where he went and my FIL confronted him ! The guy said he was sorry and didnt know I had kids in the car he also worked for the fire department ! I called the cops b/c he had a sticker on his truck that showed which FD he worked at and his liscense plate said which engine # he was. The cop said that unless they witnessed it themselves they cant give him a summons I was pizzed !!

Re: Was just run off the road by a car
I would call to let them know that someone is using a siren. I'm pretty sure that there are regulations as to who can use which sirens. I think that only firefighters are supposed to use the blue ones on their personal vehicles and only with certain types of calls. I am sure there is someone here who is a firefighter or a cop who can tell you more. Anyway, what road were you on? Did your car bottom out?

Re: Was just run off the road by a car
Fire Departments have call logs so they would probably know which call they were responding to, even if they didn't know the person. Then they can survey the crew to see who showed up. Even though you passed one station, there could be others in the area that that person was responding to.
I wouldn't let this go. If this person was in fact a volunteer, that is completely unacceptable and they should be punished severely. A blue or green light does not give them license to ignore traffic laws. They're still required to stop at stop signs and stoplights, and oh yea - NOT run people off the road!
However, you should know that anyone can buy that blue light from a supply store. That is some scary stuff right there, and I'm glad you're ok.

We were on rte 21, near 25. Luckily, we had no car problems at all. After all was said and done, I realized that we weren't stuck in the grass. I never even thought of how wet it was there and that area floods often.
Luck was truly on our side.

Re: Was just run off the road by a car
I'm glad you and your son are ok. My DH is a volunteer so hearing stories like this makes me SO mad. I would definitely contact the local FD and ask them to look into it.

Any volunteer firefighter is allowed to display a blue light in their dashboard. There's no restriction on which calls they can use them for. And unfortunately, anyone can buy a light and put it in their car. There really should be tighter regulations around who can buy lights.
