Boy, 2, run over by car likely driven by girl, 8, near Palm Springs while adults napped

A 2-year-old boy was hospitalized Monday afternoon after he was run over by a car apparently driven by an 8-year-old girl.

Sheriff's investigators were still piecing together what happened on Success Street, just west of Palm Springs, but the boy's aunt, Kimberly Hall was left in charge of five children in the home, authorities said.

The boy, Mikhi Akins, was airlifted to Delray Medical Center, where he was treated for a broken arm and collarbone and bruises to his face, chest and abdomen, sheriff's spokeswoman Teri Barbera said.

Hall, 32, and an 18-year-old were both lying down inside the house shortly before 4 p.m.when two girls, 8 and 12, went outside to the car, Barbera said.

The woman told the children not to go outdoors but the 12-year-old decided to go clean out the car, a white Oldsmobile Intrigue. Then, Barbera said, "the aunt wakes up to a boom."

The woman ran outside to see the 12-year-old standing next to a neighbor, who was holding the boy. The boy was crying "Auntie! Auntie," the woman told investigators. She said she pushed the 8-year-old out of the way in order to move the car, which was backed all the way up the gravel driveway and had banged into the front of the house.

It remained unclear how the boy, whom authorities did not identify, was run over.

Neighbor Jason Adams, 32, was working on a gazebo across the street and looked up when he heard screaming.

He said he saw a girl bent down near the front end of the car. He saw the car back up and the girl pull the boy from underneath.

The girls were trying to steady the boy on his feet as Adams ran across the street, but he told them, "Leave him alone. You're going to hurt him."

Adams said he could see that the boy's arm was broken, and "you could see the tire marks across his chest."

The boy, he said, was screaming, "Owie! Owie."

Adams told the girls to call 911, and said to himself, "Oh Jesus, God, let him be all right."

Hall sometimes watches children for days at a time, investigators said. Mikhi is her nephew.

Sheriff's Office detectives said it was unlikely any charges would be filed Monday night. Facts might be referred to the State Attorney's Office for review, Barbera said.

After the accident, the boy's mother came to the house to pick up her other children and went to the hospital, Barbera said.

How sad...A 12 yr old should know better than to let an 8 yr old get behing the wheel...I hope the little boy is okay.
