WAR IN IRAQ
Do you think anything was accomplished by this war? Do you think it was a right thing to do, to go into Iraq? Do you think it was worth so many young lives and lives of innocent civilians? Do you think it's time for American troops to leave ?

I support the troops , but I never supported the war, never thought it was a right thing to do, and it cost so many innocent lives not just our soldiers and reporters , but also innocent women and children of Iraq. It's time to leave, enough is enough.

it's a hard thing to say.
b/c for those men and women who were killed or those that had to take human lives...how do you say to them it was for the wrong reason??? do you tell them they shouldn't have?
there ARE good things happening there, amidst the violence. many Iraqi's really like the soldiers. we here only propaganda here...the liberal media lambasting...and GWB same ol' rhetoric.
I listened to my brother, to his friends, and to my friends that served there to try to get a better understanding.
what I will say and what I hope, is that ONLY THE BEST comes out of this war, and that the lives lost on any side are not in vain. that the Iraqi people reclaim their country, and don't perpetuate anti american/anti west sentiments when we do finally pull out.

Re: WAR IN IRAQ
My husband has been over to Kuwait, he arrived the day the war started.
Personally, I support the troops, but I believe that there are good and bad things happening overseas that support and diminish the idea of the war.
I know from speaking to many soldiers, as well as my husband, that we as the public in America do NOT get the whole story of what happens over there.
The soldiers that the media write about or ask questions to are not the ones on the front lines. They are usually Lieutenants or above. These are the soldiers that wholeheartedly believe we are doing good. Mostly because they are getting reports while they sit in their tent 80 miles away.
But ask the soldiers on the front lines, and you will get a totally different story-they are the ones getting shot at.
We watched a morning show with soldiers on it once, and my DH got so mad bc obviously it had been set up by the government-not one soldier was below a Lieutenant. I think that the government definitely filters what we find out.

I agree with some things you said , but no matter how much Iraqis "like soldiers " war is still a war and nothing good ever comes out of it and this one is no different, propaganda and media has nothing to do with it,the fact is that war brings distraction , devastation and suffering for many innocent people on both sides , it's affect is unforgettable , horrifying and breaks your soul, and believe me , I know what I am talking about, I grew up in a country where war became a "normal" way of life and people suffered tremendously.

Re: WAR IN IRAQ
A lot was accomplished. The leader of Iraq was taken out of power, run into hiding, captured, put on trial, and hanged. A new government was put into place. People were killed, buildings were bombed, and schools and libraries were built. People voted in free elections for the first time. Extremist militants took over certain neighborhoods. That country has quite a few major differences right now as compared to life in 2003.
Until I am given access to all the information that the President and his advisors have on what the situation was over there 5 years ago, I won't judge on whether or not going to war was the right thing to do.
No, I don't think it was worth so many lives lost, on either side. It's never worth it.
I don't think it's time for American troops to leave, because like it or not, we're already there and the country is a mess, and I feel the support of our military is needed there. As much as I'd love all our military members to be back home tomorrow, it would be unfinished business for us to destabilize a nation and then just pick up and leave because they aren't fixing themselves as quickly as we'd like. I do, however, think it is important for an exit strategy to be finalized. We need an end in sight.

The soldiers that the media write about or ask questions to are not the ones on the front lines. They are usually Lieutenants or above.
My husband is a 2nd LT and he gets shot at all the time. It depends on their BRANCH not their rank. My DH is Infantry and he's right there with the guys in his platoon doing the same thing they have to do...on the front lines.
I have to agree with everything else you said though -- what the American people hear is NOT what is actually happening over there. The media leaves out tons of info that I believe would change America's mind about the war in Iraq. There have been many many victories over there, and a lot of good is coming from it.
Also, the biggest thing I hear from soldiers is that they've lost a buddy over there and that if we pulled out now, they've died for no reason. If we stay and finish what we started, they feel like their doing something for their buddies that have died...sort of finishing their unfinished business. Civilians dont realize how much the soldiers WANT to be there. Its what they live for. Its what they do. Many many soldiers who have gotten wounded and had to be taken out of combat have said (literally first thing out of their mouth) "when can I go back and meet my unit?"
I'm not necessarily in agreement with how the war was started. BUT we started it, many men and women are invested in it, and we need to finish it. It'll look a lot worse when we back out of something that will leave a country in turmoil. We're doing good things there and I think we need to continue until they're stable enough to support themselves. And that wont be for quite some time.

Re: WAR IN IRAQ
I feel horrible for the soldiers and their families. I wish they didn't have to go through this. My best friend's husband is going to Iraq next weekend. They have a 6 month old baby and now she will have t be a "single parent." I would be devastated if my husband had to leave me for 8 months. It would kill me to not know if he was safe. I pray for all the soldiers and their families. I hope the war ends soon and everyone can come home (where they belong)

I will probably get reamed for this but I also think it is kind of shady that the Government has such a recruiting influence in neighborhoods that are poverty stricken.

I agree, infantry is different, and is out on the front lines...I was really referring to the other Branches. Infantry, I do know that they are also on the front lines.

Re: WAR IN IRAQ
According to my BIL, who is on his 2nd tour in Iraq, we have done a lot of good over there. The soldiers have helped many towns get running water, fix the roads and even build schools where boys AND girls are now educated!!! That for me is a big one!!
This was a country that was raped by its "leader" and while he was enjoying living, the people of the country were dying and suffering.
I do think that its time for us to start to make out exit from the country and let them be self-sufficent. I really do beleive that they can do it!

Re: WAR IN IRAQ
the soldiers should come home....
Basically, factions in our own gov't lied about classified info and skewed its interpretation.... presented it to congress, and rode the wave of 9/11 as an excuse to move the troops from the afghan/pakistani boarder to Iraq. It was all hideously wrong.
I have tremendous empathy for the troops.... especially since the stop loss order. They are also being neglected once they return home by the VA.... it's all so morally wrong.
I politely disagree with the notion that while we entered into Iraq for reasons that may not have been clear or correct, we must finish what we started becuase we invested so much in this situation. Just becuase we've been in there for several years and so many soldiers have sacrificed so much does NOT oblige an equal amount of additional soldiers to do likewise.
Iraqs government is less unified than the US gov't circa 1855. a religious civil war is not only imminent, it is already occurring, and is basically unstoppable.
I dislike the fact that our gov't is funding one religious faction against the other... This is not WW2... there is no obvious right or wrong. we should just step back, and let the civil war take its course w/o our contributions. After all, neither side has US interests at heart, and giving aid to one side over the other will only complicate things for us down the line....

This isn't an issue of just letting civil war take its course. This is a problem of leaving a weak country with a nascent government and no real military power unprotected in a volitle, yet extremely important, region of the globe. If we just up and leave the Iraqis to fend for themselves, it won't just be a civil war -- it will open Iraq up to invasions from neighboring countries and other world powers. The stability of that region is vital right now, whether we like it or not. Leaving Iraq to fight for itself could lead to far worse than the war that is going on now. It has very valuable natural resources and very aggressive neighbors. There are other aggressive countries that would love to step in and get a foothold in that region, too.
It's not about JUST the Iraqi people. Secure borders there are pretty important for the international community. Whatever people thing about why we started the war, etc., etc., we simply can't just up and leave at this point. It would be disastrous -- and would have far-reaching effects beyond even the Middle East.
I agree that it's time to develop a practical, WORKABLE withdrawal plan... but we need to understand that withdrawing from Iraq will be a process of YEARS, not days and months as many politicians want us to believe. Like it or not, we are there, and to me, it's less a matter of 'finishing what we started' and more a matter of maintaining stability in the region - and the world.
And on a completely different note - prayers for all our soldiers, all over the world.

I agree, but we can secure the boarders of Iraq (and make sure Iran and other nations don't get a foothold), without continuing to tamper with the power struggle within the newly formed gov't. That would require a fraction of the troops that are currently deployed.
that shia/sunni fight is over a thousand years old and will not end merely becuase we're there.... the bits realized that in the 1920's....
