VENT! (long)
Let me preface this by saying that I think most individuals in the health care industry do amazing work! Whether it be a dr, nurse, surgeon, ped, ob/gyn..etc... it takes a special person to dedicate SO much of their time/lives, to caring for other people.
Dad is in a rehab facility, aka nursing home (doing well, thank God) - and for the most part, i'm okay with the place - he gets PT everyday, and they take him for chemo 2x/month. Aside from a few mixups re: his appt dates, things have been relatively smooth since he's been transferred there.
NOW for my VENT! There is ONE particular Nurse's Asst there, that I just CANNOT stand!
long story short....(not so short actually)
she was asked to help my dad out of bed; she came into his room (which he shares with another patient), and was EATING A SANDWICH , she went over to the other patient and blurted out: "now WHY do you want to get out of bed???" after informing her that it was my dad that needed the help, she walked over to his wheelchair, and just stood there, looking at my dad, still EATING HER SANDWICH!
Now i'm starting to get really pi$$y! So *I* started to help my dad!! THAT is when she scarfed down the rest of her meal, went over to the sink and washed her hands, then made her way over to my dad's bedside. (at that point I stepped aside so she could help) She then turns to my dad and says: "AND YOU NEED TO BE A LITTLE MORE PLEASANT!" I seriously was a little and at this point, b/c my dad didn't say 2 words to her!!!! So I responded with, 'he wasn't being unpleasant just now'...
her response: (in a NASTY tone) - "well i wasn't talking about JUST NOW, i was talking about YESTERDAY! YOU weren't here yesterday, you didn't see his behavior" (keep in mind, at this point, my dad is frustrated and tired, and is CRYING)
I LOST IT! first of all, no matter how DIFFICULT my dad might be, he is STILL A PATIENT! second of all, YESTERDAY he was pulled OUT OF THERAPY because he was told he had a dr's appt - which he wasn't aware of - then, to add insult to injury, transportation NEVER SHOWED UP to take him to said appt!!!! so OF COURSE he was upset and frustrated - and maybe he used a few choice words - rightfully so!!!! and last but not least lady - YOU wouldn't be all sunshine and butterflies if YOU were in HIS shoes and weren't able to do the simplest of things; like getting in and out of bed, or brushing your teeth, or even wiping your own azz!!!! So take your crappy bedside manner and find another job!!!! If you can't have patience with the people that you're being paid to care for, then you need to be in another line of work!!!!!
I can't wait to bring dad home!
thanks for reading.

All I can say for her, is at least she washed her hands.
Why enter a profession where CARING for people is your JOB????
She's a waste of life. I'm sorry you have to deal with this.

the point i made to the Head of Administration (yes, i sure did file a complaint) is this: If this was her behavior with me PRESENT, I can only imagine her demeanor when NOONE is around!!!!!!

Document that in writing -- in a very detailed letter to her boss, sent return receipt requested, demanding someone follow up with you about this person. No excuse for that. I'd demand she never be assigned to your dad's room.

Re: VENT! (long)
ugh! for you and your dad! i did an internship at a nursing home ( for speech therapy) and encountered people like this all the time!! it drove me NUTS!! why enter a "helping profession" if you don't want to help the people you're PAID to help?! nobody is forcing you to be there! i'm can only imagine how frustrating it must be to be your dad right now... and i'm so glad that you filed a complaint. and i think you made an excellent point about her acting that way when you were there!! hopefully something will be done about this poor excuse for an employee!

Re: VENT! (long)
I"m glad you filed a complaint. Hopefully they'll follow up on it.
Unfortunately, I think that because that type of job is low-paying, sometimes they end up hiring people like that because they can't find more sensitive people who are willing to do the work and who are not overqualified. And the people who take the jobs might take them because they're not qualified for anything else. (This is just my conjecture and there are certainly competent, caring N.A.s out there).
That type of behavior should never be tolerated in a worker.
So sorry for that experience for you and your Dad! I would be heartbroken if it was me in your place!!

Re: VENT! (long)
Wow....
First... & that your pops gets out of there soon!
Second... I hope that you said to her everything you typed in that post! She deserves a tongue lashing!
Third... I hope even MORE that you called to complain to whomever her boss is. That kind of "bedside manner" should NEVER be tolerated. I get it, people have bad days, but in that line of work, leave YOUR problems and YOUR bad days at the door because I'm pretty sure they can't compare to the problems and bad days of the people who you "help" every single day.
I'm so annoyed for you! No one and I mean NO ONE deserved to be reprimanded like a child... who does this woman think she is...

Great suggestions!!
Also, maybe find out if there's a governing/regulatory board that you can report the facility to if they don't follow up with you.

ITA!!!!
I've seen this SO much- they act like they're doing the patient a favor by actually doing their JOBS. It's SOO frustrating, and UNACCEPTABLE. Write a letter so that it is in her file and on record. She is completely out of line on so many levels and this should not go unreported!! I'm sorry that you and your Dad have to deal with this!!

Re: VENT! (long)
Like someone said, oftentimes the assistants in these homes choose this profession as a last resort. It's unfortunate, and their behavior, is despicable. The most important thing for your father right now is to have an advocate by his side and it sounds like you're doing one hell of a job

Re: VENT! (long)
i know exactly what you mean. first hand.
my brother is also crabby and has an attitude and the people at St. Johnland are great. They apparently love their jobs because i know i couldn't do what they do everyday. I hope dad comes home soon.
