Vacation with or without your LO?
I'm sure this has been asked a TON of times, but when did you first leave your LO and for how long?
We are looking at planning a vacation in December, and my son will be about 13 months. I think I’ll have a tough time leaving him, worry the whole time, and would rather bring him with us – we are thinking an all-inclusive in the Caribbean. My husband thinks it won’t be a vacation since we will be running after him. Am I crazy for being nervous to leave him alone, even if he is totally safe with our parents?

Re: Vacation with or without your LO?
I could never leave my DD with anyone for more than one night, maybe two TOPS at that age. Not because I don't trust my parents (they would be the only ones I'd consider leaving her with overnigth) and not because I'd be worried. And yes, I'd miss her but I'd be ok. But the reason is I would feel way too guilty leaving a child at that age (walking, getting into everything, not sleeping well. terribly, terribly high maintenance ) with my parents who are in their 70s. I would never impose on them like that for a week. It wouldn't be fair to them.
When I made the decision to have a child, I realized that our old life and old vacations was done for awhile.
When DD was that age we went away for our anniversary for one night. That was my limit

We only did one night away from our DS. I wouldn't take an extended vacation though, but thats just me.

Re: Vacation with or without your LO?
for our 30th bdays me and DH Puerto Rico for I think 7 days.
DD was about 18 months. She stood with my parents for the week. I felt a little guilty but not enough not to go away It was 4th of july week so we missed it spending the holiday with her. My DH right before we left started to freak out but I think mostly it was his anxiety to fly and the fact he read PR wasn't the safest place
we both had a good time sure we missed DD but she was in good hands.
My mom sent pics to me everyday and I called often checking up on her. Both my parents worked at the time (they are 58 and 60 now) so she still continued to go to daycare the days they were open. My parent even took her to their vacation in Syracuse for overnight cause we weren't getting back in time (we just flew in there and took her home)
all in all we had a great time, she was fine and my parents had no issues with it.
I would definitely do it again.

Re: Vacation with or without your LO?
we went away for 5 nights when DD was 8 months. it was WAY too long. I don't know what I was thinking. I missed her so much and to top it off there was a snow storm and it ended up being 6 nights.
I think going away without kids is great if you have someone to watch them like grandparents who are willing and able. but I learned my lesson and 3 nights would be my limit.

Re: Vacation with or without your LO?
We are planning on going on vacation without DS this summer for 3 days, 2 nights. We'll be about 3 hours away. DS will be 15-16 months old.

Re: Vacation with or without your LO?
We haven't left them for more than 1 night yet (We we've gone away for 1 night 3x). They are 1,3 and 5 now.
I'm thinking our first "real" vacation since having kids will be for our 10th anniversary. The girls will be 3, almost 5 and almost 7 at that point. Sometimes I think we'll just bring them since they'll all be old enough to spend a few hours here and there in the kids club.
I would LOVE to go away for a few days- but I really don't have anyone willing and able to watch them right now.
So, no- you aren't crazy

Vacation with or without your LO?
She's 6 We never vacation without her. Period.
Ironically I suggested myself a vacation without BOTH of them and got some rather interesting responses LOL. I'm still working on that.
I got two days by myself in NYC and it was amazing. Now I want to do that every year!

Vacation with or without your LO?
I am not ready to leave my 9 mo DS for an extended period of time yet. He still nurses and wakes over night to eat so I would feel too bad leaving him. I would do a night or two (and only with my parents or sister, not my in-laws) but not any longer.
We have already brought him on a bunch of long weekend trips (both flying and driving) and in a couple of days we are going to Turks & Caicos with him. He does everything with us when we are home (restaurants, shopping, etc) so he does fine with us while away and it wouldn't feel like a family vacation without him.

Re: Vacation with or without your LO?
only for a night at that age I think to ac but I have twins I felt it was too much of a burden on anyone to ask for longer than that, my cousin's ds will be about 8mos and is leaving him with her mom for 2 or 3 nights, I probably would have done a long weekend at that age if it was just one child but not a whole week
eta dh and I may be attending a wedding in Greece next summer my twin dds will be 6 and as long as my parents are able to watch them I am not taking them, and I don't think there is anything wrong with taking a vacay without your kids, yes my kids are my life now but sometimes you do need a break, dh and I will also use it as a 10yr anniv gift to each other, marriage since twins has been unbelievably hard and rocky and we need it, you have to do what you are comfortable with, if a little bit of you is nagging away saying oh I don't know, then don't do it, you will be worried the whole time, but if you are okay with it then go, to each his own

Vacation with or without your LO?
My twins are 4 and my DS will be 3 in August. Next month will be the first time ever we are leaving the kids and only for 1 night. We don't have Anyone to watch them for longer than that but if we did we would. I don't think there is anything wrong with going away without your child. If you trust your parents and they are 100% ok with watching your DS while you go away for a week then go for it. You and DH need time for yourselves too.

DS is 5 months tomorrow and we are spending 4 days down in Florida without him. He will be staying with my mother. We have no guilt about leaving him, we will miss him, but no guilt.

Exactly this!!
DH turns 40 this year and we contemplated going away for a few days without the kids. In the end we realized we would rather do a family vacation than only go away for 3 nights. So DH said he will celebrate his 40th 6 months later in Disney this year - I told him he was a great dad for choosing this way to celebrate.
Our life right now revolves around our kids and their needs. When they are older - I look forward to going away with just my DH!!!

Re: Vacation with or without your LO?
The past 2 years we've gone away for 3-4 nights alone once a year. We just planned the same for this year! My mom/inlaws watch them at night and our nanny comes for during the day. I miss them terribly, but it's such amazing and necessary alone time for me and DH, and I know they are in great hands. I don't feel guilty, and we take the girls on many vacations, but I do miss them.

Vacation with or without your LO?
My DD is 3.5 and would be a disaster if she didn't see me for several days. I wouldn't put my mom or MIL in the position, though I trust them both completely.

This! I love my DS and miss him every minute im away but also feel that my relationship with DH is just as important and needs to be nurtured. I am blessed to have the help of my parents and my in-laws. If i didn't i would absolutely feel differently. Just the though of leaving makes me a little weepy, but for me is also necessary to de-stress, get rest, and come home to my DS happy and recharged and able to give him my all. DS loves being with them and the grandparents covet the alone time they get to bond. At the same time i totally understand why people wouldnt want to leave. I know plenty of people who wont and I agree with their situations too. I think whatever you are comfortable doing is the right thing for you. Good luck!

Re: Vacation with or without your LO?
The first time my DC was 10 months. We've gone away every year just DH and I. The kids have fun, grandparents are fine , and we get to connect.
We have gone between 3 days to 6 days. I have also gone away for 4 days and even a 7 day cruise without DH or the kids. It's so normal to them , they look forward to the change in routine
To add: we always take the kids on great family vacations as well. I never like to wait to do things "until I'm older" because life should be lived and enjoyed while you can! In other words, before I get old ;)

We went to aruba for a week when DS was 8 months old. It was hard, but it was great for us. He had a great time with my parents and I have absolutely no regrets. I am glad I took advantage of their generous offer to watch him, cause now that #2 is on the way, I can't imagine leaving BOTH with someone for a week!

Re: Vacation with or without your LO?
I've traveled for work events for 1-2 nights once or twice each year, but DH has been with them. Other than a few weddings when DS1 was 2.5, we haven't been away from DS1 for more than 1 night. We haven't gone away since DS2 was born. We hope to go away this summer or fall for our 10 year anniversary for at least 3 nights. My youngest will be 3.
