UTI interference?

Just a question and if its stupid don't laugh, but I've never had a UTI.
I had my yearly check-up at the doctor. They did bloodwork and a urine analysis. (TMI alert) My urine showed a higher than normal level of bacteria, so my doctor asked if I had a UTI. I replied no, no symptoms of that, ie, no burning, etc.
My question is- is it possible for a UTI to interfere with the TTC process if you don't take meds for it? My gut is to say no, but I'm not really sure.

my initial answer is i wouldn't think so - BUT - i would also think that there is a delicate balance with the 'stuff' 'down there'...

here's one answer:

I have gotten quiet a few UTI's just make sure if you do have on that you tell your Dr. you are ttc and if you have the infection they will put you on a medication that is not catagory C. So the medicine will be safe for baby if you did get pregnant. And you can get them from increased sex. Try going pee right after sex that may help reduce the UTI's. Getting a UTI was my 1st sign that I was pregnant will all 4 of my pregnancies. So be sure you are not already pregnant. =

not sure about TTC - but apparently, they are common DURING pregnancy...

A Urinary Tract Infection (also called a UTI for short) is an infection of the body's system involved in excreting urine. This can take place in the kidneys, the ureter the bladder or the urethra. Most often this occurs in the urethra and bladder.

UTI's may be more common during pregnancy. Studies are inconclusive on this point. Some doctors theorize that as the uterus grows its increased weight can block the drainage of urine from the bladder, causing an infection.

Signs of a UTI may include:

-Discomfort when urinating
-The need to urinate more often than usual
-A feeling of urgency when you urinate
-Mucus or in the urine
-Cramps or pain in the lower abdomen
-Pain during sexual intercourse
-Chills, fever, sweats, leaking of urine (incontinence)
-Waking up from sleep to urinate
-Change in amount of urine, either more or less
-Urine that looks cloudy, smells foul or unusually strong
-Pain, pressure, or tenderness in the area of the bladder

If the UTI goes untreated, it may lead to a kidney infection. Kidney infections may interfere with pregnancy, causing early labor and/or low birth weight. If the UTI is treated early and properly, this should not be an issue.

If you think you have a urinary tract infection, tell your health care provider. He or she will test a small sample of urine for bacteria and red and white blood cells. The urine may also be tested to see what kind of bacteria are in the urine (called a urine culture). If your infection is causing discomfort, you will probably be treated before the urine test results come back.

Antibiotics are typically used to treat UTI's. Your physician may prescribe an antibiotic for as much as 10 days. It is typical for symptoms to subside after three days or so; however, you should finish the antibiotic or the infection may return.

There are several things you can do to help avoid getting a UTI:

-You should drink at least eight glasses of water a day.
-Be sure to thoroughly Wipe yourself from front to back after urinating.
-Shortly before and after sex empty your bladder.
-Wash the genital area with warm water before sex.
-Wear cotton underwear.
-Take showers instead of baths.
-Avoid tight fighting clothing and pantyhose.

thanks! let's say I had only a *slight* one and didn't need meds for it, like this past month. do you think that just the fact that I have any of that bacteria messes stuff up? I'm thinking like you, that it's a delicate balance in that region.

Ok, from reading all of that, it seems as if the UTI in and of itself won't interfere with the TTC process, but the medication you take can. So if you do have a UTI, make sure you tell your doctor so that you take the right type of meds.

I read somewhere, I don't remember where, but it said that if you are prone to UTI then it's OK to empty your bladder after BD'ing to avoid any problems, just as long as you go back to lying down with a pillow under your hips...

I have to find where I read that!
