That's right mail is held but only the junk mail. 1st and priority mail has to go out that day while junk or parcel post can go out a few days later.
I'm getting the junk mail...just not the 1st class mail.

My dad worked for USPS and I do remember him getting our own mail from the box and saying something like "No first class mail today" I think it all depends on the big trucks delivering the mail to the post offices.
This would make sense, if the mail actually had to travel on a big truck.
I've had someone mail me something at the post office in the same town as me, so all it had to do was get on the mail truck. Took 9 days. 9 DAYS!!! Oh, and arrived on a Saturday.

It's been happening to my mom a lot. I haven't noticed any delays at my own home - but my mother's? Definitely!!
It happened to her before the weather as well.

Re: US Post Office- holding mail on purpose??
the carrier at my work told us that they no longer have "local" delivery. ALL the mail from a post office goes all the way up island or off maybe? (he told us where ours goes - from Hampton Bays - but I really can't remember exactly what he said) and then gets sorted there and comes back. SOOO stupid if you ask me, but that is how they do it now so maybe that is why you are getting more of a delay then before?
Though he did say they have been doing it for quite a while - like maybe more then a year.
