UPDATED W/NEW PICS IN BOTTOM. Creative types and those good with paint colors, please come in! (Long w/Pics)

I'm having the inside of my house painted in 2 weeks, and I'm having a hard time picking colors for a couple of the rooms and really need some help! I have a very large expanded ranch so many of the rooms open out into eachother.

First, here's a partial picture of my center hall. I really don't want to paint it another shade of yellow, but I'm so clueless about what will look good. You'd be standing in my living room looking at the hallway from this view, the living room entry way is very wide, and it's yellow and white, which I will be keeping since I love the walls in there. I really want to create a "cozy" look. I was thinking a shade of blue, but I don't know: (I'd also be painting that hallway in the back as well.

Next room is my dining room. Again, I don't want yellow. I was thinking since I have the chair rail, I could do two colors. I love the colors in the area rug under my table, it's probably hard to make out, but there are different shades of blue and a rust color. Any ideas? As you can see in the 2nd picture, it opens up into our family room which I will be keeping the color it is now (like a golden yellow)

My kitchen is a very pale yellow right now and I will be going with a darker shade of yellow - something like what's in the La Boheme Print on the wall.

And Finally... the ugly blue bathroom upstairs. We don't use the upstairs, but I want to get rid of that wallpaper that's been there probably since the 70's and paint. We are not redoing this bathroom anytime soon. It does have a new floor and a new vanity. I'm thinking a dark white, like a cream color? Any thoughts?

TIA!!!

I would definitely go with differing shades of blue/blue green.

you can go a lighter bluish shade in the foyer and pump up that color (with perhaps a very light buttery yellow) in the dining room so it pulls out the blues and the greens (b/c it seems to be from the limited pic a combo of the two colors)

but since you want some kind of blending uniformity...I'd pick a richer/darker color for the dining room and shade out from there in the others.

behr has a great color guide (even if you don't use behr paint)

good luck

if you want to stick with neutrals for the bath..Benjamin Moore had a paint..it's called Dark Beige. It's very nice, deep enough but not too dark. It might tone down the blue tile a little.

For the bathroom, depending on your floor color and lighting in the room, I would possibly do a brown wall color. I love brown and that color blue together. My dining room is Benjamin Moore Caramel Apple - a nice rich brown.

Good luck!!!

My suggestion would be to take a look at the benjamin moore historical colors palets. All their colors coordinate with one another. You can't go wrong with it.

In my kitchen we have bleeker beige and in my living room we have philadelphia cream. They look wonderful together. HTH

Thanks everyone!

I don't know why I didn't think brown with blue, for the bathroom, as I love that combo! The floor is white, but not blaring white.

I'm so clueless when it comes to all this house decorating stuff!

This is how I painted my house with different colors.

This is the hallway that goes to the bedrooms.

Each bedroom is painted a different color. But I think they compliment each other. My kitchen, LR, DR & Hallway (BM-Carlisle Cream) are all the same color because they are all open to each other.

2nd Bedroom - BM Nantucket Breeze
External Image
3rd Bedroom - BM Haystack
External Image
Master Bedroom - BM Brittany Blue

Bathroom - BM Weekend Getaway

For your DR I like the idea of a Rust Color. Maybe use two colors since you have the chair rail. A color that compliments from the kitchen or Family Room would be nice. And I love the idea of a medium tone brown for the bathroom.

HTH! GL!

i would paint the foyer a burgandy and the dr a burgandy and a tan (either or on top) and then the adjacent lr the same tan as the dr.

in re: to the bathroom, an ivory would look great. pair with plantation shutters and either b&w or sepia artwork. is it in the budget to replace the toilet?

eta: i didn't read the OP, just viewed the pics. since you aren't changing the lr color and the dr area rug is staying, i echo what Ophelia suggested.

I would stick with neutrals in different shades. Maybe pick a tan and use a few off the same paint chip. If you do a color you may get sick of it quickly and if you stick with neutrals you can change things up with accessories.

I like that!

This is what I decided to do in the dining room (painters started this morning).

I'm using BM Lenox Tan on top and BM Stratton Blue on the bottom.

I decided on BM Marblehead Gold in the entryway and hallway - which is the same color as my family room. The kitchen we are going with BM Dorset Gold. Even though I said no yellows, I think these will help to warm up the house. At least I hope so!

The blue bath I'm doing BM shaker beige above the tile.

I also have to additional bedrooms being painted. One will be Lenox Tan and the other which is our office willb e Palladium Blue.

Painters finished on Friday. Here are pictures of the finished rooms (including two rooms I hadn't previously posted). Also, please don't mind the mess, I'm still in the process of putting everything back together after having to take everything out of bookcases, etc for the painters.
