Update Thurs night to clarify...They called....
The dr that did my sonogram yesterday called me just now. My beta went from 37.6 to 37.
Now I don't know what to do.
Part of me feels as though maybe my beta started to go up and is now starting to drop since my last beta 2 days ago-- and that part of me wants to wait this out and see if it continues to drop. They 'highly recommend' that I get this shot tomorrow. She and Dr. K just had 'a long conversation'- which really annoys me b/c he could've saved himself some time and had the conversation w/ me instead of her and then her calling me. I don't want to hear from these other ppl, I want to hear from him- HE is MY dr!!! She started talking about the risk of a tube rupturing (mind you they still don't have a clue if this is etopic or not) and blood transfusions, etc.... and told me that IF I opt not to get this tomorrow then I have to drive to Melville on Saturday morning and do another beta and IF that beta is not lower then I have to turn around in the afternoon and drive back to Melville to get the shot then. Why is nothing ever easy? WWYD? She also never went over any specifics about this either!!!
Great..... now I get to go out and face the world like everything's fine.
Update: I just got home from helping my mom run her errands. Thank you for all of your responses. DH, my mom and I all decided that tomorrow I am going to take a trip (w/ my mom since DH is working) up to either PJ or Melville.... probably PJ first as that's where Dr. D. is...and based off that I will decide what to do. If I'm physically in any pain I won't question it. If she can give me some good reasoning I'll probably go to do the beta one more time on Saturday and either drive back there and get the shot or see if the beta hasn't changed much again if they'll let me wait until Monday (and if the beta went down again I'll ask to wait to Monday for another beta). I need more clarification- that's why I'm reluctant to take this shot. Dr. D is the one who called me today and same as yesterday she never gave me an inkling of a thought to think that they think this is etopic- shr flat out told me twice that she DIDN'T think I was... which is the main reason I'm having a hard time with this. If any of them for 1 second said they thought this was an etopic- I would've been there already getting this shot, as much as I honestly don't want to. It wouldn't have been a question... but the fact that my beta is so low and AF is here so they don't have a clean look (for lack of a better term) is what's troubling me. They can't even see it.... it's less than 40 on the beta- how can it do damage? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I'm seriously asking- can something that tiny in beta units actually do damage? Most ppl w/ etopics that I know of had MUCH higher betas... Mine haven't doubled in a week and a half since my first to 2nd beta. I don't know what to think at this point--- and she couldn't give me straight answers about how much time off it would be, etc... which are things that I want to know and she knew that yesterday.

I would call and say you want to talk to the doctor before making any decisions.

I agree with Lauren.
I would at least go back on Saturday for another beta check and then start thinking about what you want to do.

Re: They called....
Hey. I've been so busy at work but checking in to see any updates from you.
Did you speak to Dr. D. or a nurse?
Honestly, I was thinking about you last night and today and I would get the shot. I would want this to be done and over with. No more testing. No more running back and forth.
I know you are upset about waiting the 3 months but, you are already out for this month. You can't do the FET until your beta drops. That could take a while. So, no matter what, one month shot. The next two will go quickly and you can ready yourself for the FET. It goes fast, trust me, it does.
While I doubt it's an etopic, would you want to risk it??? I believe, and someone correct me if I'm wrong but, the only way they can confirm an etopic is by going to a radiologist and having testing done. At least that's what I was going to have to do if my levels were still high. Although, since your beta is so low, they may not see anything anyway. I just wouldn't want to risk it.

Shannon, I would do one more beta...but be very careful...ectopic pregnancy can be very dangerous. Idon't want to scare you! I had one last year...I had to have two shots of methotrexate to end it..

Re: They called....
I would call and speak to your doctor.....this is not an easy decision to make.....
IMO...I would wait another two days and see what happens with your beta on Saturday...
your beta seems very low to be ectopic but of course I am not the doctor and anything is possible I guess (I just never heard of an ectopic pregnancy with a beta that low)....my beta was much higher when Cornell recommended the shot to me but I decided to wait and few days later my beta started to drop.....
Whatever you decide to do I will for you
Wanted to add that before I was going to get the shot they were sending me to the radiology department to check for sure, but with a beta of 37 they will not see anything anyway so I guess that is why you are not scheduled to get that done.....

Re: They called....
Personally, as devastating and heartbreaking as it may be, I would take the shot. While 3 months seems like an eternity, going through complications from an ectopic and possibly losing a tube, and having to undergo surgery is by far worse.
Im just so sorry you even have to deal with this and make this kind of decision - my heart truly goes out to you

I'm so sorry you are going through all this Shannon
I think if I were in your position I would probably just take the shot to have some finality to the whole situation and not risk a tube. I know it's not an easy decision and the three month wait seems like an eternity, but as someone said it will go by fast once you start it.
Whatever you decide, just know we're all here for you

Personally, I would probably get the shot. Emotionally, it is so much and physically, you don't want to risk damage.
The only other advice I can give is to call the service and demand that a dr call you back. i know Dr. K is on vacation, but ask for brenner or drosch. i always feel better hearing from a dr, not the nurses.
I hope this gets a little easier for you

Re: They called....
Shannon..
Frst, I am sooooo sorry you are dealing with this.
If it were me, I would go saturday am and fine something to do around that area. You could go into Huntington and walk around town or go to the walt whitman mall. Explain to them the situation and make sure they put a note on your file to call AS SOON AS the results come in.
I know you are upset with Dr. K, but he IS on vacation, so I think it is nice that he is even checking in on your case rather than just letting the other Drs deal with it.
I dunno.. at this rate your beta is dropping very slowly, so you are probably going to have to wait a while to do a FET as it is. When I think about that, I think the shot might just be easier so you are done and can move on.

Shannon, I"m sorry!!
IMO I would take the shot so that you can start to move on again. And take the shot so that you don't risk further harm to your body, like a pp said you don't want to lose a tube!
3 months sounds like a lot of time but it really isn't. Also thinking ahead, you might want this time rather than worrying about an FET during the holidays. They can be stressful enough.
Start fresh in Jan - take this time to heal, mourn, grieve, get yourself in shape, do acu, take a vacation with DH, etc

Re: They called....
I am so sorry you are going through this. When I had my second chemical my beta was kind of high. I was so paranoid about an ectopic that I would have done that shot in a second. The timing of this stinks since Dr. K is on vacation but I would demand to speak to him, Dr. B or Dr. D directly. This is an important decision and I think you need to hear the recommendation directly from the horse's mouth.

Thank you for your thoughts on this. I'm going to read every one (again) and try to weigh this before I go to bed. I just updated my post to try to make it more clear now that I've had some time to think, in the original post.

Re: Update Thurs night to clarify...They called....
I am so sorry Shannon. This is such a nightmare!!! I really cannot say what the best thing to do is as I have never been in your position. I think I would try to do another beta tomorrow. I know they do betas on Friday and then return for the shot Sat, if necessary. I hope you get a clear idea regarding what you should do after speaking with Dr. D

I'm not upset w/ him. I know he works hard and he def. deserves a vacation. That being said DH & I heard for easily 5 mins yesterday how he calls in 'at least' once a day and how he always leaves his # where he'll be staying so they can reach him and how he's such a workaholic... and how she was pretty sure he'd be the one calling me tomorrow (today) if he thought I needed this shot. That being said, I would've called my patient if I was checking in anyway. I would've had a brief yet informative conversation to set her mind at ease as much as I could --- he HAS to know that I'm totally lost over here and upset. How can't he? He's the one that gave me the 1st beta and I've been in beta hellll ever since, KWIM? It is what it is at this point, but it would've been nice.

Re: Update Thurs night to clarify...They called....
Ectopics can be very dangerous, as one of the other girls said. I would take the shot. This way you can move on faster (forget the three months), both physically and emotionally.
You just need this to be over at this point. We're still praying for you! Stay strong!

Re: Update Thurs night to clarify...They called....
Being that Dr. D told you she didn't think it was ectopic, I'm starting to think that they want to give you the shot to end it for you. They must be aware of how much this is stressing you out and maybe they feel that the finality of the methotrexate will give you closure.
It's just a guess on my part...but if they don't think it's ectopic, it seems like the only other possibility.
I would go to Pt. Jeff and either speak to Dr. D there or have her call you...and get the full, detailed story. Ask her why they want you to have the shot...is there any danger or are they just trying to ease your path. Find out for sure what the waiting period is for the next try...don't let her off the hook - get answers to your questions. But try to remain calm and ask every question - even if you have to write them down tonite or tomorrow a.m.
Good luck....
