update at bottom: kitchen renovation

Ok...

so the kitchen in the house we bought is all original from 1940s. Needs to be renovated. DHs parents are buying our appliances (thank goodness) but we need to re-do the floor, counter top and back splash.
All those things can be done fairly reasonably for low cost (DH does all the work himself).

However, the question is the cabinets. I am not sure what to do. We cannot afford to totally replace them brand new. I know that I can probably scrub them and re-paint them and put some new hardware on them if I want to go the cheapest route.

But, does anyone know of any place to get inexpensive cabinets or new cabinet doors for a reasonable price?

Re: kichen renovation

are the cabinets wood? if so, do what i did in our kitchen. I took them down, took all the hardware off, scrbbed them, sanded them, repainted and put bran new hardware on. The looked like brand new cabinets, and the biggest cost was the new hardware.

Have you checked out Ikea? They have great quality cabinets for reasonable prices and they are beautiful! You could also go to HD and buy the cabinets that they have in boxes in the store and install them yourself.

DH doesn't like Ikea unfortunately. I thought of that because the cabinets truly are reasonable there..

honestly, i would wait until you have the money to redo the entire kitchen the way you want it. if it is functional, just deal with it for now.

Re: kichen renovation

You should re-do the cabinets. If you want to you can even get some moulding at HD cut to zise and do an edge on the doors to modernize them. You are going to need to really clean everything if its original it probaby has tons of grease. Maybe let some pine sol sit on the cabs before scrubbing. Then prime and paint

Post pics if you can

I agree. Since you're cabinets are wood I would definitely repaint and change hardware. It's a cheap fix and can make a 100% difference. Check out some blogs like Young House Love (I believe they had a moodboard where they repainted some kitchen cabinets and it totally transformed the kitchen)

ITA with this too. I would never get rid of good construction solid wood cabinets for a cheaper replacement just for the time being. It's a waste...better to save up and be able to do your entire kitchen reno the way you really love than to just do cheap now to get you by..

I think that if you are going to do redo them down the line, don't do anything just yet. No sense in getting new countertop and everything if you are just going to tear them out later. If you plan to keep them I would just have them painted and change out the hardware like someone else said. If you hire a professional painter they will look really nice. I wouldn't spend the money on refacing its pretty costly and they don't always do a nice job, it can look cheap...

Re: kichen renovation

Yes. I think I am going to convince DH that since we dont have the money for our "Forever" kitchen, perhaps we should spend as little as possible to make it OK for the next 5 years or so..So that means scrubbing and painting the cabinets, and new hardware.
We will end up doing the counter top and back splash (but not the expensive kind). We already have it picked out from home depot and will prob only be about 300 total (for the counter top and back splash...going to do the precut cheap stuff for now- no granite or marble)l.

I feel Ok about this...thanks ladies! Chat Icon

do you belong to Costco? They have all-wood cabinets that seem to be a good deal.

Re: kichen renovation

I would do very small updates. Maybe repaint the cabinets. Change hardware and wait until you have the $$$ to change it all.

This is what we are planning on doing bc the cabinets in the house that we are buying, bc they are a really dark brown.

Rustoleum makes a product for refacing cabinets that doesnt require sanding. We were thinking of using it...
They also make a product for the countertops as well.

update at bottom Re: kichen renovation

Update:

So it turns out that we are going to be getting an AMAZING deal on NEW cabinets for the kitchen. WAY too good to pass up. And it is through a reputable place, so I am completely comfortable with it. We are doing it through DHs Uncle who is a contractor. I guess business isn't booming right now, so the manufacturer is throwing in all sorts of upgrades for free. So it turns out that I will be getting my forever kitchen a little sooner than expected.

We of course will have to re-prioritize the order of the renovations of the rest of the house now, but I am totally psyched!Chat Icon
