my house is usually very clean b/c i am home all day, every day cleaning...
if someone is coming (which is really only my mom or sister anyway since we don't really know anyone down here that would stop by  ) i will light a candle and do a quick swiffer and fluff the couch pillows, that's really it...
when we have company visiting (to stay over) than i go psycho - my SIL is coming wed with the kids so the next 2 days i will be psychotically cleaning, i don't know why but i get crazy over it, especially with the dusting, vacuuming, disinfecting, i think i have a problem
Im the same way. When my parents came to visit last summer for a week, I cleaned for 2 weeks prior. EVERYDAY.
Dusted every blind in the house, cleaned all of the moulding, appliances, toilets, showers etc. Everything had to be spotless. I'm a freak! It's serioulsy a problem.
I'll admit too that when I go to someones house, I will look in their shower to see if they have any mildew. I actually look for something dirty!!LOL

This goes for family as well as friends
If they have to drop something off, it goes in the mailbox or the porch.
How does this work? If you are obviously home will you just not answer the door?

Throw all papers in a drawer, all errant clothing items in my closet.
Thats pretty much everything we have laying around anyway.
I like to always have baby hot dogs on hand - everyone loves them. Also the Savorings (pepperoni and mozz) by Pillsbury - those are the bomb. Anything frozen...

I don't have unexpected guests that just decide to invite themselves over, but sometimes I may have an impromptu get together. In those cases I:
1) Empty the bathroom garbage and hide the recycle garbage in the kitchen since we don't have a can for it yet.
2) Light candles
3) Wash and put away dishes
4) Sweep and if I have time mop (or at least wipe the kitchen floor since it's white).
My house is never that messy at any given time so I don't have to go cleaning like a mad woman when people come over.

I do nothing special. If you want to pop in or show on short notice expect my house to look like a war zone and half naked kids to be running around screaming. If they don't like it then don't come 
I work full time as does dh. I have 2 kids and a dog. I wah so my house always looks like a disaster since I let the kids play with everything so I can get my work done.

wipe down counters in kitchen & bathrooms
straighten up coffee table
close closet doors (and toss any junk in there before shutting the door!)
i keep the frozen spinach and artichoke dip on hand from trader joes. pop it in microwave for 5-7 minutes and walla!!! its sooooo good! serve with chips and ive never heard anyone say they didnt like it 
i also keep hummus, cheese & crackers, salsa, etc on hand. we're big snackers anyway, so i guess we're always prepared for guests! lol

I LOVE unexpected guests. I enjoy having friends/family over. My house is clean 99% of the time so I nevber really rush to "faux" clean, LOL! I can't stand messes, dirt or clutter. Clorox wipes are my best friend. Swift mop for the kitchen and bathroom floor for a quick wash. I always have salsa, avocado's, chips, coffee, cookies and cake on hand.
Same here. If someone calls and tells us they are stopping by I mop quickly, but for the most part the house is always clean. I cannot stand going to bed at night w/ dishes in the sink & messy rooms so I am always straightening up.. guests or no guest.
As for food we always have chips & salsa in the house, cookies, or some kind of fruit that I can put out.

DH does this to me a lot with baseball and football games since we have the big screen and surround sound.
I usually just do a quick once over in the bathroom, swiffer the living room (since I have a cat that sheds like crazy), and keep all the bedroom doors closed.
He usually has wings in the freezer, or they order a pizza.
This is pretty much my life in a nutshell, LOL. DH loves watching the games at home and wants to have people over all the time.

I keep the kitchen and living room clean for the most part. My rush is to clean the bathroom. I will clean the toilet seat, around the sink, and will clean inside the toilet if I have time. I definitely also empty the bathroom garbage cans.
I am mortified if people come over and have to use my bathroom and it is dirty 
I am the same way! I always try to keep things as clean as possible b/c of my fear of pop ins. If someone calls and they are liek 5 minutes away, i run around the house like a chicken w/o a head and start throwing things in rooms and close the door... DH cracks up!
Just happened to me recently and DH was really enjoying it lol

This is me ! My mother did a drop in twice and I ended that real fast . My dh and I like our privacy and don't want to have to worry about someone dropping by .
