UNBELIEVABLE - I need to move to Charlotte, $$$

My friend who lives in Charlotte just bought brand new build home in a planned community with a rec center, clubhouse, pool, playground, etc.

Any other part of the US, save for other urban centers like Miami, LA, etc will have cheaper housing than expensive LI. Just watching HGTV is a recipe for deep depression when they show newlyweds in their 20s buying a 5 bd/3bath 4K sq feet home w IG pool, CAC, jacuzzi tub, hardwood flooring for only $250K and 5K/yr taxes. but then again, salaries and general COL on LI are higher. I'm just wondering when the house of cards will start crumbling. We can't sustain constant increases in property/school taxes while salaries in certain fields remain stagnant or frozen.

HGTV totally depresses me.

However, on the flip, especially in many areas of "the South" they lack what NY has, especially in terms of good jobs, health care/community resources, decent schools, etc.

It's just one example of many, but I have worked with MANY disabled people who stayed and/or moved back to NY because there are no resources for them in states with lower COL.

I even see differences in more rural parts of NYS compared to LI/NYC area.

Family who still live in the area I am from originally (Hudson Valley) have a very difficult time finding a decent job even though COL is so much cheaper and you can have your pick of what are now often brand new, huge houses.

There's been a ton of development around my parents but often the houses are now vacant and up for sale because the couple who bought couldn't take the commute back and forth to Westchester and/or the city.

I find the people who are most successful and stay are the same who would be the most successful and stay on LI because their field will always need them, and there will be good jobs.

Oh there are totally up and downsides, definitely. However, not for them. She is a teacher, and her DH has his own Physical Therapy business so they do REALLY well, on par with NY salaries (at least her DH, as a teacher she doesn't make close to what she would be making here and there is no union) but the area is brand new with every service and amenity and store you can think of. With them its almost comparing apples to apples lifestyle wise, minus their cost of housing.

Yep. My BIL and SIL built a 5 bedroom home for $182k in NC. My ILs bought a 5 bedroom new construction for $200k. Makes me sick sometimes.

Before we got serious about finding a house here, I really wanted to move down to NC b/c of the cost of homes. I even went as far as to look for jobs and found zilch for DH and myself. There we just so many more opportunities up here so we nixed the idea.

It doesn't bother me at all. And we are owners. There isn't enough money in the world we could potentially save that would make us happy to live away from NYC.

I could live in those areas and live like a queen but it would tear me up inside to be so far away from NY. We wouldn't be happy in those kinds of places.

We are moving there in 5yrs mostly because of the cost of housing and taxes and there are some really good schools in Charlotte. Both Dh and I will be taking our ny salaries with us so it will give us the opportunities to live better lives with our children. NY is crap and there is no justification for the amount of Money we pay in taxes.

I am so tired off LI living and wish we could move out of state. DH needs to be close to family so I'm willing to settle on upstate NY.

It makes me sick to my stomach how much money it takes to live in our 1100 sq ft house in a decent area on LI.

Do you know what part of Charlotte? We're looking to relocate within 2 years if we can make it work. We are sick of the Long Island/NY rat race and the huge mortgage for a small, old house. Huge negative is my teacher salary decreasing by more than half. Regardless of our mortgage being smaller, cost of food, cable, etc won't be that much lower.

yea homes here are ridic. We just bought a new house but are stuck in ny for the next 10 years until DH retires. Then he wants to move to FL. We will see!

Technically, they live in SC, in Fort Mill. However, it is 5 mins outside of Charlotte and in the current home that they just sold, the state line LITERALLY divides them from their neighbors behind them. The new home is still in Fort Mill.

When I was researching Charlotte I looked into Fort Mill as well, supposed to have great schools and because its in SC supposedly the taxes are cheaper. I would def move but DH won't budge.
