Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
You definitely can find a great newborn photographer for under 500!
I wanted to recommend a wonderful photographer-you can find her on FB-Anne Hack Photography. She will be taking pics at my DD's 1st. Her NB pics are adorable and I think she is offering specials. When I have my next DC, I will definitely be calling Anne Hack Photography!
Anne Hack Photography
I would also definitely second the Forever Fireflies rec-she was amazing with my DD's holiday pics-she is definitely reasonable, takes great pics, has great props, etc.

You may want to check out Forever Fireflies (one of the LIF vendors)...
http://www.foreverfireflies.com/
I know Heather intentionally tries to keep her prices affordable and her work is phenomenal....She also gives the rights to all images for the client to print and you get a ton ! (she does offer processing of the prints but the client isn't under any obigation to process their prints through her, which is also nioce and keeps the price way down)..
Her prices are on her site I believe (for in studio newborns) ...Mine was under $300
ditto - i am just gettign a disk from her - she is most likely coming to my house which is very far from her and even with her travel fee she was the most reasonable!!
Heather was just here today doing DS's newborn pics. She was phenomenal! Highly recommend

Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
feeling a bit more relieved...i got a call from a photog. today who was more reasonable and VERY nice & easy to talk to on the phone. for some it may not seem like a big deal but for me... the difference between $250-350 and $550 is the difference between me getting them and not getting them.
I get that we are paying for their artistic eye which is unique to them and not everyone can just pick up a camera and take shots. I totally respect all professions in the art industry. But as someone who used to sell my own artistic creations...I am not a fan of making those things unattainable to the average blue collar family. together my husband and i make decent money...but between a sky high mortgage / bills and a baby on the way...we just can't afford $550+ on something thats considered a luxury and not a necessity. KWIM?
That being said I totally appreciate all your feedback and reccomendations! I now have more options within my reach! you girls rock!

Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
I'm using AvaJack for maternity and newborn b.c her prices were the most reasonable, we used her for maternity pics when i was preggo with DD #1 and I LOVE her style. Shes an amazing photographer who manages to make me look AMAZING in all my pics so I cant wait to see what our newborn pics will look like.
Like I said her prices were the best, I'm paying under $500 for both maternity and newborn with all pics uploaded online where I'm able to purchase a CD for next to nothing. Not to mention shes such a sweetheart...lol

We get a lot of professional pictures taken. My mantra is that I would probably pay $5000 20 years from now to have those pictures if I didn't get them done.
we use diMonda

b/c its 'THE" thing to do -
Don't give it a second thought. Invest the money in a great DSLR camera and I promise you, you will never spend a dime on a professional photog.
My son is almost 2, my house and PC are FULL of amazing photos that everyone thinks I paid a small fortune for - He has NEVER been photographed by a 'professional' ..........
You will have beautiful pics of your baby - You don't have to pay someone a small fortune to do it for you - I promise !!
I couldn't agree more...its all LIF supply and demand. In 4 years when this isn't trendy anymore, they'll be very reasonably priced!
As pp said, use the $$ to buy a DSLR that you can have for years, and take your own professional quality photos.

I think it depends on the level of photographer you are.
We have friends with cheap point and shoot cameras who get fabulous pictures of their family. DH and I are TERRIBLE photographers. DH keeps upgrading our camera and lens and our pictures don't come out any better.
DH even attended a workshop to take children's portraits because he thinks pro photography is a waste of money. He finally caved in and admitted we just stink at taking pictures.

This is true, I am pretty good w/ my camera, DH, not so much - hence why I have NO pics of myself w/ my son !!
But the pricing of it is just simple Economics - Supply & Demand. Right now it's 'in' so the price is high .....

Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
I am going to explain why since i have BTDT, NB shoot and many of other photo shoots.
By far, the newborn shoot was the one shoot that my photographer worked the hardest and deserved every penny!
I do have twins- so ok, double the work but she bought ALL her props to my house, and set up pretty much her studio, and lugged it all, ..spent almost 5/6 hrs of her time, molding and putting each baby into the pose for her amazing picture.
I was amazed of how patient she was and all that hard work of course paid off in the amazing photos I got.
That why

i dont think they are expensive at all - i have contacted basically all vendors used on here and i believe no one was over $400
i spent over $500 on bpics which i found to be the biggest waste of money
check out Forever Fireflies - they are very reasonable and i love her work!
Hopefully if all goes well & we are blessed I want to use them too. Love their work.

I take a ton of my own pictures and I'm pretty darn proud of them but I think that there is something to be said for having a photoshoot where you get someone else's eye. I do not believe that the price always dictates the quality. You just have to dig through a lot of photographer's sites to find what you like in your price range.
