um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
so darn expensive???
sheesh!!!
I was going to ask my dad to pay for them instead of getting a gift off the registry...until i realized it was more like 500+ instead of 200+.
sooooo now me and my mom are just buying props and using our good cameras to try and DIY.
It sucks bc i'd love professional shots...they come out so beautiful...but for me to pay $500+ and not even get ALL the shots back...its just excessive.

Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
You can find photogs that give you all the images for that price...I can think of 2 off the top of my head.
But most of the popular ones are more expensive, and the quality of the work is obviously better for those who specialize in newborn and children.
It's like how some wedding photographers can be cheap and others might cost $10K -- it's just what you're willing to pay for, and the professional level of the person doing the job.

Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
I am using Swade Studios. She travels and really does amazing work. I won't post her pricing because it isn't my place, but she is on the cheaper end of photographers I've priced out.
Here is her site:

Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
my photographer is charging $300 for everything - the shoot and a CD of hi-res images. she's more of a classic style than the frilly hats and pillows and props, which is exactly what i want out of newborn pics.

You may want to check out Forever Fireflies (one of the LIF vendors)...
http://www.foreverfireflies.com/
I know Heather intentionally tries to keep her prices affordable and her work is phenomenal....She also gives the rights to all images for the client to print and you get a ton ! (she does offer processing of the prints but the client isn't under any obigation to process their prints through her, which is also nioce and keeps the price way down)..
Her prices are on her site I believe (for in studio newborns) ...Mine was under $300

I'm not the original poster, but thank you all for posting this information. It's something I so want to do, but we're in no position to spend quite so much.

im planning to use In My Tree Photography. i have never used them before so i cant rec specifically yet - but a friend did (her baby is in their blog) for both wedding and baby, and I love the simplicity. Plus their prices are great since it's a new business and I love supporting new local businesses.

Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
i dont think they are expensive at all - i have contacted basically all vendors used on here and i believe no one was over $400
i spent over $500 on bpics which i found to be the biggest waste of money
check out Forever Fireflies - they are very reasonable and i love her work!

ditto - i am just gettign a disk from her - she is most likely coming to my house which is very far from her and even with her travel fee she was the most reasonable!!

Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
i think the cost of the shoot is pretty reasonable. but it gets expensive when the photogs start to require a minimum purchase through them. that's when the price doubles! so it all depends on what you're looking for. im willing to pay for the shoot itself, but i want the cd with all the pics included in the cost so i dont have to order anything additional through the photog.

Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
b/c its 'THE" thing to do -
Don't give it a second thought. Invest the money in a great DSLR camera and I promise you, you will never spend a dime on a professional photog.
My son is almost 2, my house and PC are FULL of amazing photos that everyone thinks I paid a small fortune for - He has NEVER been photographed by a 'professional' ..........
You will have beautiful pics of your baby - You don't have to pay someone a small fortune to do it for you - I promise !!

Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
... because people are willing to pay for it. We have a DSLR but will probably get pro newborn pictures because there's a lot involved and we want someone with experience taking these particular shots...
We werent planning to do maternity pictures but I bought the $99 photography shoot groupon a few weeks ago and will probably use it for a maternity shoot (unless I hate the way I look, in which case we will use it for a holiday shoot or some other shoot in the next year).
It's easy to feel like you need newborn pictures, 6 month pictures, a shoot for every holiday, a cake smash, etc but if you take the pictures yourself I'm sure they will come out great too

Re: um...so why are newborn photoshoots...
We will be spending $600+ on our newborn shoot.
I had to explain to DH that it is cost of the time of the shoot plus editing time. You are also paying for the level of quality of your photographer.
When DS was 1, we found a cheaper photographer and the quality was night and day. I'd rather pay extra and get quality pictures.
I contacted our wedding photographer for a price quote and they quoted me $1500 for a 2 hour shoot. Suddenly the $600 seemed affordable.
