Ultrascreen results (minor update)

I got my ultrascreen results from my doc yesterday. He said that due to my age, my risk of having a baby with Downs is 1 in 96 and according to the test results, it is now 1 in 1300 so I guess that is good.

But age-wise, my risk of having a baby with trisomy 18 or 13 is 1 in 79, but according to the test it is 1 in 18!! I am so beside myself right now I can't even begin to explain it. I was PG a year ago and had a MC at 10 weeks. They did genetic testing on the fetus and found that the baby had trisomy 18.

I know that there are alot of false positives with these tests, but because of my age, and the fact that I already conceived a baby with a chromosomal abnormality, I am so afraid that this is not a false positive.

My doctor said that with these results, he has to recommend an amnio. He also said that with trisomy 18 or 13, it is almost impossible for a baby to have it and not show any abnormalities on untrasound so he said that we can wait until our level 2 sono to see how everything looks and then decide whether or not we want to do the amnio at that point. But after discussing it with DH, I think I need to have the amnio before 20 weeks. I just don't think I can wait another 7 weeks to find out if everything is ok or not.

Please keep me and DH in your thoughts and prayers. I know that if the baby does have trisomy 13 or 18 that it can not be changed by prayer at this point, I am just praying for the strength to deal with bad news again if that is what happens.

Oh, and my amnio is not until Dec. 3rd. The doc said I have to be 16 weeks in order for it to be safe to do.

Re: Ultrascreen results

I too am an older mom and lost a baby to Trisomy 18 at 8 weeks. I elected to have a CVS done the next time just to be sure.

You would have to get an appointment right away but why don't you do a CVS? I had two done and they were both easy on me and the baby. Plus the peace of mind early on was great.

Re: Ultrascreen results

I feel so sorry for what you are going through. I also got sketchy results at my last test that indicated the my baby had a soft marker for Down's Syndrome. I had more sonos since and everything seems okay besides the marker, but i won't know until the baby is born that everything is okay. I am just having faith that it will be. Please try to do this too! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Ultrascreen results

Good luck! My ultrascreen results came up 1 in 62 for Downs and I had my amnio on Tuesday...I am nervously awaiting results so I know how you feel...just stay positive, the odds are still with you!! 1 in 18 means that there are seventeen chances everything is fine and only 1 it isnt!!

Re: Ultrascreen results

So very sorry. I know how you feel. I was 1:23 for downs and it was the worst weeks of my life. Everything was fine so keep the faith. Odds are still in your favor for everything being OK
