trying not to be frustrated...long
Went for my growth sono today, baby is 3 lbs 9 ounces (a little bigger then he should be at 29 weeks) His organs and everything look great and his heartbeat is strong. I met with the doctor that I dont really like today and she said based on my first weeks blood sugar readings that I am definitly a gestational diabetic. She said that they will be putting me on meds tomorrow at the perinatologist because my morning numbers aren't good and there is no reason they shouldn't be
She told me I will be induced at 39 weeks if I havent gone into labor yet and the baby will be in the NICU after birth to monitor his blood sugar.
She really scared the crap out of me with all the things she said... I really dislike her bedside manor...
Anyway, im trying to stop mopeing and just deal with it... im not that good at that

sorry to hear about all that. i'm sure she was just trying to be upfront and honest with what will happen but then again, im sure there was a nicer way to present you with the info. i'm sure this happens to many girls so keep your head up

Re: trying not to be frustrated...long
wow that seems kind of harsh. . I am obviously NOT a medical person but I thought there were so many things you could do to control GD. . I have had a few friends with it and honestly none of them went on meds or had their kids in NICU. .
again - I know ZERO but it just seems odd to be that sure of what will happen weeks down the road. . that said - hang in there, I'm sure you and your LO will be totally fine.

I'm not following entirely. What is "first weeks blood sugar"? Did you do the 1 hour glucose test?
I did the 1 hour glucose test 2 weeks ago and failed. Did the 3 hour last week and passed with flying colors.
Or are you already diabetic hence why she mentioned morning fasting numbers?

Re: trying not to be frustrated...long
Also wanted to mention my DS measured huge my entire pregnancy. I passed my 1 hour glucose test with him. And he was born 9lbs 3oz at 38w6d (went into labor naturally) perfectly healthy, was never monitored for anything (except jaundice which is a totally different story).
So just because a baby measures big doesn't mean anything.

I actually have gestationsal diabetes... I failed the 1 hour and threw up all of the 3 hour glucose...so we started treating me for gd and have now confurmed I do have it
first week's blood sugar is my blood suagr numbers taken by finger stick four times a day for the past seven days...
this continues for the next 10 weeks and it is diet controlled, hopefully I wont need medication, but my ob thinks I will

Oooooh, now I understand.
Well, I think the way your OB treated you was a little on the harsh side, but I guess she just wanted you to be clear of the facts.
My friend had GD with her son and he was never monitored after birth and she delivered him at 36 weeks because of uncontrolled preterm labor. So I am not sure it is the case that all babies have to have that monitoring, but I'm not entirely sure.
Many I know how stressful pregnancy is by itself, to now have to worry about this too is probably very overwhelming.

This sounds harsh.
Did you see a nutritionist and did they go over your diet that week? How bad were your numbers? Did you exercise?
It seems odd they they are making such drastic assumptions already.

Re: trying not to be frustrated...long
so sorry you are dealing with a doctor like that!! GD is like my worst fear so I understand how you felt when she was telling you everything she said. She seems rude & like she doesnt have a heart. She should not be a doctor!

Do you have another dr. in your office that you can get an opinion from? My friend also had GD and her baby was not monitored...

Re: trying not to be frustrated...long
That was wrong of her to scare you like that. I do not see why you baby would go to NICU after delivery. When I had DD, I had GD and all they did was test her blood after delivery. IF there had been a problem then she may have gone to NICU, but they check first.
I have it again this pregnancy and DS will be checked after he is born. NICU has never ever been mentioned!!
With my previous pregnancy, within hours of delivery, my sugars were back to normal. Once the placenta is delivered all was good.
