Trick or treating
The previous post reminds me of a conversation I had with my husband yesterday. Is trick or treating actually dangerous?? Has anyone realllyyyy put poison in kids candy? Wouldn't that be stupid?? I mean, you cover a mile radius of your home, right? It can't be that hard to track down who stuck needles in the Reese's. Why would anyone do that out of their own home?

I honestly think a lot of that stuff was urban legend or hoax.
Razor blades in candy, etc.
I don't think any of it has been substantiated

Exactly. Sure you will get the occasional 2-yr old chocolate bar that turned gray from the 90 yr old woman down the block, but that's about it.

There was a case in Texas that created the paranoia back in the 70s. A father poisoned his son's pixie sticks to collect insurance money. It sparked the paranoia that still exists today.

I think the razor blade in the apple may have had a basis in an actual case, but I believe that was also done by a family member. However, I can't find a link to back that up.

I thought something actually happened when I was a child. I remember the start up of all our candy having to be checked and places offering free xrays of candy.

Yes but I think that turned out to be a hoax.
Like someone put a razor in their candy and was like- look at this!
And it created a mass panic

I actually think the "safe" trick or treating events that people are doing now a days are not so much for safe candy- because let's face it- a nut can be anywhere handing out tainted candy.
It's more for safety as in- not walking on busy roads going house to house, not being out in the dark, etc

Trick or treating
This safe trick or treating deal must be a LI thing because my parents in Queens get literally hundreds of trick or treaters every year. If someone wants to poison candy they're going to poison candy. Period.
I'm taking DD unsafe trick or treating. We're hitting the houses on the block with decorations. That's as safe as I get.

We always had to take our candy to the health clinic and have it x-rayed EVERY SINGLE YEAR growing up. I remember how annoying it was LOL. I just check my DD's candy. If it's not completely sealed, it gets chucked (like dum dum's etc.). If it's clearly from LAST Christmas, it gets chucked!

Do you have to wait in the waiting room for all the patients with broken ankles first? How disruptive is it to have trick or treaters taking candy to the local hospital to be x-rayed while they're trying to keep people alive? Were the clinics doing it for free? How much is it costing them?
And lastly, does insurance cover candy x-rays? Lol

LOL. It wasn't a hospital. It was a county health clinic, so it wasn't open during the night (akin to the health department clinics around here). I grew up in the Midwest, so I have no idea how it was here. But yes, people definitely found strange things in their candy in the 80's!

I live on LI and never once did a safe trick or treating with DD and we get TONS and TONS of kids trick or treating to our house and in our neighborhood.
Honestly ,trick or treating in a mall store to store seems a bit lame and I'd rather not go at all if we have become that afraid of our neighbors.

LOL, was wondering this too!!! I grew up in the 80's in NY and never heard of this!!!

Growing up in Brooklyn, the worst thing we'd get was pennies from the old ladies. But even that was good because we would add them up and grab quarter drinks and potato chips!
My father used to say he had to check my candy before I ate Any to be sure it was safe. But really he was just taking all his favorites out lol

I think it was a way for my dad to steal all my good candy. He would always have a pile of candy that was poisoned. I was horrified as a kid that so many people were trying to poison me. In hindsight.. it was all his favorite candy. Ahhh the '80'sj... when it was totally PC to traumatize your kid.
