I literally finished this yesterday not even knowing it was going to be a movie. Loved the book (although I could have dealt with more of an "ending") and I've been in love with Jason Bateman since Valerie...does that age me? Lol!
Anyway, I wonder why they changed the last name and I also wonder if the setting is still going to involve the shiva...

I don't think they changed the last name...its Forman in the book and the movie. And I think the scene qhere they're all sitting in a row in the house is the start of the shiva.
I've loved Jason Bateman since Valerie too! LOL

Ah, I just rewatched it (for the seventh time...lol) and caught that! Weird! Everything I've read about the movie uses Foxman...IMDB, articles on different media sites, the official website.
And stupid autocorrect changed "Foxman" to "Forman" in my post above. At least it didn't change it to "Foreskin" HAHA.

I loved the book and the movie looks terrific - except for the fact that Jane Fonda is in it. I have such a visceral reaction to her - totally ruins it for me.

I think she is a good fit for the mom. I think Tina Fey & Jason Bateman are actually too old for their parts, but the trailer looked good so I am going to let that go! 
It also looks like the cake scene was toned down, if I remember what happened in the book correctly.

I know I read this book but I have no recollection of it. I really like the cast of the movie but this trailer does something that many other trailers do these days... ruin major plot points. Very aggravating.
PS, I have loved Jason Bateman since Valerie as well!

They changed the last name to Altman from Foxman.
One of my colleagues has a small part in the movie. She is the cantor for the funeral scene.

Today I went to a panel on this movie with Jonathan Tropper, Shawn Levy (the director), Tina Fey & Jason Bateman.
It was so good!
Eirran & pearlJamChic I found the answer to your question! It was one of the first things the Moderator asked.
They changed it b/c they couldn't get clearance for all the Foxman names and they didn't want to change the first names. They can't legally use a name if there are people with those names in the area where the movie takes place. They also changed Jennifer to Quinn - they didn't say if it was for the same reason.
They showed 2 additional clips from the movie & explained why some things were changed. I can elaborate if you want, but I don't know how
much you all want to know.
All four panelists were really good-Jason Bateman is really funny & they all seemed to really like each other.

Since they filmed in Bellmore & here in Great Neck there must have been a lot of Altmans. We got to see them filming the scenes in & around the sporting goods store - it was fun to see! I'm sure the sign said Foxmans outside.
