Totally taboo topic....does anyone look forward to going on vacation WITHOUT their DC?

I see so many posts on here from Moms saying that they can't imagine leaving their kids even for 24 hours....am I a totally terrible Mom for looking forward to 3 days away from DD in mid-July?

We took DD to my IL's pool on Sat and they were out of town so it was just me, DH and DD. It's so terrible but DH said to me the next day, "it's not so much fun when we can't pass her off to my parents".....newsflash DH...she's a lot of work!Chat Icon Anyway, we were planning on taking her with us (we are just going out to the Hamptons which I'm not even that psyched about), but after the disastrous trip to my ILs I realized that I really can't truly relax when she is around. Does anyone else feel this way or am I the only selfish and heartless Mom alive?

I notice that too.. and everyone is different. I love getting away for a few days!!! I think its good for mama and baby actually.

FH and I will be on our honeymoon in Sept. for 8 days.. she'll be with my mom and her aunt and uncle. I know she's going to have a great time and so will I

Its such a coincidence that you just posted this. We just got back from being upstate for 9 days..with the entire family. It so was not a vacation for me at all. I mean, I LOVE spending time with my daughter..but I had NO BREAK. My sister and mom showered her for me after the pool 2 days so I got to stay in a little longer and they dont like to swim but other than that, it was rough.

I was just wondering when I will be able to get away at least over night to foxwoods again. I feel like I need a break more than ever now. I dont think your horrible for saying that, I think your a normal human mommy! Have a great time!

It's normal and healthy to want a break.

Heck even when I leave him with DH for an hour for a pedi it's like mini vacation. I think we need couple time away from the kids and it makes everyone appreciate eachother more! DH and I went to the Hamptons w/o DS and missed him, but had a wonderful break from the day to day of an infant! We plan to do it again this summer. Also he was in great hands at my mom's and THEY liked having him. Don't let anyone tell you it's wrong!

DD is almost 3 and I still can't imagine vacation without her. Would I like it, probably but I'm not ready to do it just yet. The most we've done is one night away and that was only downtown.

Re: Totally taboo topic....does anyone look forward to going on vacation WITHOUT their DC?

no way, we LOVE to vacation WITH the kids, a night out without them? ABSOLUTELY, but I have no interest in leaving them for vacation, once they grow up my hubby and I will have plenty of time by ourselves, for now we LOVE being with them and we realize the time in them WANTING to be with us is limited (usually only until age 8 or 9). But I totally respect everyone's opinion, I just tend to be very anxious leaving my children wlth anyone for extended periods of time, I think it would put a damper on my trip if we were without them.Chat Icon

With DS and 2 dogs all day.... I want to go to an exotic island BY MYSELF!!!!!!

That being said, we don't really have the option to. If only my mom lived closer.... (me... day dreaming!! Chat Icon )

So DS will come with us. We love him but yes it's not relaxing.

For me, not taking the dogs on a vacation would actually be vacation!!!!

No, I don't think it's terrible at all.

I love DS, but there are times when I really need time apart from him. Honestly, I think he benefits too from being cared for by his Dad and getting to spend more time with him. If I could go away somehwere on my own right now, I would.

So no, not terrible at all. Enjoy your weekend, and don't worry--DC will be fine!

Re: Totally taboo topic....does anyone look forward to going on vacation WITHOUT their DC?

I love my kids, but I don't feel the need to be with them 24 hours a day. When they were smaller I was less likely to be apart from them for more than a few hours, but now at 3 yrs and 15 months, I'm totally fine leaving them with my ILs or parents.

Two weeks ago, we were in NY with the boys and we left them with my parents for 3 days. We drove down to Baltimore to hang out with friends and to get some much needed alone time. We contemplated taking them with us not bc we'd couldn't imagine being away from them but I thought the two of them might be a little much for my parents to handle. I got over that really quickly, though.

We haven't done a real vacation without them yet, so we'll see how I feel then.

DS is 2 and we have taken several trips without him. We love getting away to relax, and we totally trust my parents to take care of him, so that helps. We have found that after 3 nights we miss him and are ready to come home.

I vacation without my kids for about a week once a year. A few times we do weekends away from the kids. I love being alone with DH. It doesn't mean I dont love my girls; I just crave that sexy, feminine romantic feel that I can't have when the girls are around. It is great for our relationship and marriage.

We are going away for about 4 days next month and relaxing in Montauk. It's good for everyone! DH and I get to relax and rest, while DC's get to spend time with their grandparents.

I have NO PROBLEM dropping them off and taking off for a few days. Chat Icon

Re: Totally taboo topic....does anyone look forward to going on vacation WITHOUT their DC?

We were so nervous about leaving the boys that we didn't have a honeymoon when we got married last year. We did a single night in the Hyatt - and thought we would be a wreck. BUT we were fine and so were they. So Rob and I took a first anniversary trip to Mohonk in May WITHOUT the kids from Friday - Sunday. We missed them - but it was nice to miss them! It was fabulous and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I probably couldn't go more than a weekend - because I really did miss them - but it was a good time.

Re: Totally taboo topic....does anyone look forward to going on vacation WITHOUT their DC?

I have no problem leaving him. But i don't want to.

I enjoy taking the day off work and being with him. I am so excited about our vacation coming up with him.

But, I work FT so the thought of being away from DS and missing out on time with him is not ideal for me.

If I had to, I would in a minute, but if I could avoid it, I wouldn't leave Ds.

I came from an upbringing where my parents went on vacations without us practically every year.....
IT HAS TO BE DONE!!!!
For your own sanity.
We are currently planning a trip to Sandals w/o DS....I will miss him terribly, but knowing he's with his grandparents who are fighting over who gets to watch him makes me feel a lot better....

Oh - I def need a break alright but - I can't imagine leaving him yet. One day - probably within the next year we will go away without him and leave him with my parents - but I'm so not ready for it.

My family always does a girls weekend - they want to plan it for the fall - and I don't know that I'll be ready to leave him then either. I don't mind him sleeping at my parents house - but to be gone from him all day long - I just don't think I could do it just yet. Chat Icon Chat Icon

But - MY GOD - How I need the break.

You are soooooo not a bad mom - it's totally normal! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We went on an overnight trip in May for our 4th anniversary and while I drinking a mojito I told Dh that I can't wait to go a 3-4 day vacation were it is just us. I felt guilty saying that but we have not been on any vacation since oct. 2005 and even that wasn't a crazy trip because that was our babymoon . I love our kids to death but I think the parents need some us time too.

I like taking the girls with me even though it's so not relaxing..BUT i like having family experiences..we just got back from visiting Melijane in SC for a week we drove and we had the best time. I stuck to their routine and we had a sitter for 2 of the nights we were there so we can go out. also my girls go to sleep by 8pm so we had the nights to hang out. I think the key to vacation is havning alone time with your DH while on vacation..go to a resort with camps and sitters.
