I am offended on behalf of others.

but i think with many things, this is the problem. People may not be amused, but with something that would not have even bothered them otherwise, they become offended b/c they think its whats expected.

again I agree

Same with things with 9-11. Some people are truly interested in watching things like the movies, yet say , OMG, thats so offensive, BELIEVE what they are saying, but still wish they "could" watch.

ooh I am not offended because I THINK others might be. I am offended on behalf of the people that are dead therefore CAN'T be offended.

I didn't watch it yet, but I think I would probably be very uncomfortable with that joke. DH says that he would be okay with it, basically b/c it's what he expects from that show and everything is fair game for them. I do think there is a point where FG crosses the line, even though I love that show overall.

exactly, i'm so used to it, it doesn't phase me

Thats hard though..what about Anna Nicole jokes? JFK jokes? Titanic jokes?

How do you get society to respect the Dead then? Thats the issue I think you have and want to see brought to light.

DH and I watched it too. I gasped in shock, but they still got the laugh.

I agree that if they had touched on 9-11 like that I would have been offended. New Orleans didn't touch on me, therefore, I could laugh. Sorry to be on the fence on this one.

i know.. i meant that too. the whole idea of being offended on another person's (assumed) behalf.

i'm not saying they weren't wrong (b/c i didn't even see it anyway)... but jstu that they're almost Always wrong.. they posses NO tact or couth.. but they're like that about everything, so i'd feel hypocritical condoning them for this, when i've laughed at just as bad, if not worse. Chat Icon

Re: Tonight's episode of Family Guy

If you're watching Family Guy you're not easily offended. I've seen at least a dozen moments on the show that were at least as offensive as the one you describe (I haven't seen it). I think if you're watching the show, you kind of make that deal to not get offended or to get over it. Chances are, eventually they're going to do something that strikes close to home for you. If you don't like it, don't watch.

As far as the "too soon" argument is concerned, if someone is saying something is "too soon" it's usually something they would find offensive 10 years from now. Will 9/11 jokes ever be funny to me? No. but I takes that risk in the comedians I choose to watch. Gilbert Gottfried shocked a lot of people at the Friar's Club roast that occure a few weeks after 9/11 with his jokes about airplanes, but I think it's part of personal psychology, and a aprt of our psychology as a culture that we need to laugh about things to get over them. You have to stop crying at some point.

it's the reason i think anti-Bush jokes are so funny, when really they're not. I mean his policies have caused a lot of death and destruction, but the way I see it, there are two ways to cope - laugh and cry. I'd rather laugh. I think that's better than ignoring the situation altogether. Maybe in some way that tasteless joke raised awareness for some people and brought New orleans back into their minds. So many people are still suffering and we hear very little about it.

1. never hear an anna joke, jfk joke or a titanic joke. Seen movies about the latter two but never heard or seen a JOKE. Maybe I just live in a cave.

2. My issue is it's just too soon. Heck, when two movies that were paying tribute to 9/11 were being made we had A LOT of posters on this board all saying "too soon." Is there a different reaction to this thread because one happened in most of the posters home state and one didn't?
I am not trying to specifically offend anyone here so please don't take it that way, I am just trying to have a conversation.

I agree. I have a completely undeserved reputation on this baord for being "so into PC", which isn't the case at all. I'm actually afirm believe that if you make fun of everyone equally, all of the "wrong" jokes can be VERY funny. It's all about the intent behind it. If someone is truly racist, or in this case if I believed the writers of Family Guy were truly not compassionate for or really wished harm on the people of New orleans, I would feel differently. but on Family Guy no one is safe. It's like Chris Rock and George Carlin, they try to get us to laugh about all of the elephants in the room

I have seen people use the word "fag" (because that's the word they learned and they didn't the origin of) they didn't have INTENT as you say and I have watched you RIP into them.
Heck iyou are how I know the meaning nad would never use the term again...not even in the UK to mean a ciggie.

Totally different! The kind of jokes on Family Guy, IMO are ona different level than using words like F-g, N-----r, etc. It's just not acceptable, IMO.
There's a long history of hatred and DEATH behind those words. I don't think there's anything wrong with educating people and telling people that I find it offensive. And guess what, people who have used the word "f-g" on here have most of the time used it in a derogatory way toward someone is gay or is perceived as being gay. People who have said it, even though they don't know the history, were still saying it in a hateful way. It's one word that really gets to me personally. There are some posters to whom "retard" is just a mild insult along the lines of "idiiot" and for others with mentally handicapped family members, it's deeply offensive.

Everyone has a level and it varies on different things. I know a lot of people in the gay community and gay-friendly community (think Margaret Cho) who use the word "f-g" and mean it harmlessly, just like Chris Rock uses "N----r" and he means it harmlessly. That doesn't mean it's not offensive to someone.

And to bring it back to Family Guy, if they used the word "f*g", it like the New orleans joke, and others would make my jaw drop, but it wouldn't make me boycott the show unless I felt it was intentionally derisive.

Having one thing that hits close to home doesn't make you overly sensitive or "So PC", or lacking in sense of humor.

And guess what? A lot of people will NOT use the word "f-g" only since I told them what it really means. So that means that they wouldn't have used it if they had known. To me, hearing that word used in any derogatory manner just brings me images of Matthew Shepard.

I have to add that i thought about it and I admit I would handle a Katrina joke a lot more easily than a 9/11 joke.

Heck, I am one of those people who learned from you. But I think that people who use a word and are ignorant to it's real meaning or it's origin is different. YOU brought up INTENT and that is the counterpoint I was trying to make.

I agree. I guess it just surprises me that people still think that word is acceptable. Because to me, I know it isn't. So when I hear it used in a derogatory way (even if it's not menat hatefully, per se), I assume the person knows that it means. So when I hear it I think "OK this person knows what the word means, and is using it in an empowering, or acceptable sense" like Margaret Cho, or lots of gay and gayu firnedly people I know (I still hate it then anyway, but that's another story) Or "this person knows what the word means and is being deliberately hateful"

I think I grew up in an environment (going to very liberal schools from 8th grade on), where by the time I was a teenager I learned that it wasn't a joking, acceptable kind of word and was inappropriate, so I assume that most people have the same experience, and also have grown beyind the "f*g tag" elementary school days and see that it's not really an appropriate word.

MOST of the people I've heard say it IRL (who weren't young kids who didn't have a clue what it meant, and who weren't of course, gay people), have meant it in a completely derogatory and hateful way.

So I admit I may have made incorrect assumptions about people's knowledge of the word. But like I said, to me it's like "n****r", and I don't think most people would be caught dead using that word.
But context is definitely key, as with everything.

ETA: A good example is Ann Coulter. Last week she called John Edwards a "f*g." She didn't mean (I don't think) that she felt he should be burned or killed. But she still meant it in a completely hateful way. She was trying to imply that he's gay in a negative and hateful way. It absolutely shocks me that this woman is still allowed on television. Look at the uproar over calling Obama "Clean and articulate" imagine the fallout if they had called him the other word I mentioned.

ETA #2: I think I forgot to say Touche. Good call out

in poor taste IMO...Chat Icon

i wonder how many people who lost family members in NO were watching the show, and what their reactions must have been! Chat Icon

that reminds me of a skit they did on the radio when the spanish singer Selena was murdered....someone pretended to be her, and then they had gunshots in the background! crude, rude, and completely insensitive. nothing different from the FG epi tonight IMO.
