toenail separating from nailbed--possibly pregnancy related which is why i'm asking moms
at the end of DD's pregnancy i noticed my big toenail felt different. when i took off my polish, i realized it looked different as well. the nail had thickened and separated from the base starting at the front of the nail.
i'm starting to get nervous about it because she's 6 months old and it's not healing and bothers me sometimes. i've been googling it and some sites say pregnancy can cause it (other medical conditions can cause it as well but i don't have any of them). trauma can also cause it but i don't remember anything falling on my foot, but it is possible.
has anyone experienced this before during their pregnancy? will it heal? is this permanent? will it get worse? should i go to a doctor?
my dermatologist happened to see it when i had a different foot issue about 3 months ago and didn't say anything to me.at that point i wasn't worried about it and didn't ask him.
who knew being pregnant could affect your toes

That happened to me too. I went for a pedicure one day and noticed a huge black bruise under my nail and that it was coming away from the nail bed. I couldn't remember doing anything that would have caused it. This happened pretty early on in my pregnancy and it still hasn't gone away completely. I think you have to wait until the nail grows out.

I haven't had that happen. However, I would see a derm. because it could be fungus. My friend had something like that happen it turned out to be caused by a fungus.

I know that after I delivered, I realized one of my toenails was odd. It kept getting worse. I finally went to a podiatrist. He said it was quite normal in PG women and women recently postpartum. He worked on it for a day and all was well! I also know that smdl had a massive problem with a toe after being PG.

Well during my pg I tripped and my big toe bruised badly. The nail got weird looking and it took over a year until I realized there was a new nail growing under it. It finally fell off but still looked weird, and then I got an ingrown toenail from the way it grew back. It finally looks normal now and DD is now 17 mths old (this happened when I was about 8 mths pg). I thought it was a fungus, but it wasn't. Yours could be a fungus, def go get it checked.

Ironically this just happened to AJ
She started off with the thickening of the edge of her toe then it looked funny and it was just 'strange' for such a long time. Just this weekend it finally 'lifted' and I was able to take it off.. there was a nail underneath it. The new one looks sorta funny too. Has a crease in it.
I don't think she's had trama. I cut her nails and I've never seen a bruise.. go figure. But its not really bothering her so I just let it go.

what did he do to it to make it better? mine is separating on the right side but the left seems fine. so bizarre!
does anyone know what type of doc is best to go to? a podiatrist? dermatologist? gen practitioner?

Go to a podiatrist!!! Mine was so kind and knew how to deal with postpartum women. In my first trip he cut the nail in question, peeled back the skin, and basically performed a mini-surgery. He gives your toe a local anesthetic and does what he needs to do. Then he will give you some awesome toe antibiotic. No down time to it at all. Let me know if you want his name.
