Toddler Changing Themselves

At what age could your child easily change themselves?

I feel like I probably do not encourage my 3.5 year old son to do it by himself enough (as we are always in a rush in the morning and I do not have 10 minutes for him to try to put one leg in his pants and then another 10 minutes for him to put the other leg in.)

Whenever I do let him try, he puts his underwear on backwards and I just need to redress him to get out the door. He still has a very hard time with shirts, but I think that is a hard skill to master especially if they are fitted.

Any thoughts? I know eventually he will be able to do it, I was just wondering if people had an approximate age when their child could do it.

Thanks!

I still dress my 5.5 year old - but, he could do it himself (it's more of a time issue).

DS 1 would get himself dressed around 4-4.5

My first struggled with fine motor so more like 4-4.5 I started really pushing it and she still needed help at times. My youngest is almost 3 and she's just starting to try shirts more but the rest she pretty much does on her own.

My youngest could dress herself, put on shoes, brush her hair around 2.5. My oldest still needs help at 5. I feel like they are both outside the norm though.

Re: Toddler Changing Themselves

My dd was able to do undies and pants around 3.5 but just starting to get shirts now and she will be 5 in December. Granted we’re usually in a rush and I never really “fostered” the learning!
