Passport for Toddler and changing name on mine?

Anyone know the process for getting a Passport for my almost 2 y.o. (will be 2 when we travel) and changing the name on mine?

If I change the name on my passport do I need a whole new book and card?

We are Traveling mid August. Do you think I have enough time?

ETA: Actually, I am now wondering if I need to change my passport name at all if I book my tickets in my maiden name. My license of course has my married name on it though. Anyone know?

I believe that getting a passport for a child is the same as an adult. You just need to send in parent's id as well. As for your name if you haven't changed it on your license then book it in your maiden name. If you did change your name then get a new passport in your married name.

For your 2 year old, it usually takes 6-8 weeks, but you can always put rush on it (i think it is $45 or $60 extra) and get it in 4 weeks.

For you, you can always travel with your passport and marriage license.
The name on the ticket has to match the name on the passport.

If you are traveling inside US, then you don't even need a passport and from what I know neither does your DC

Thanks! We are definately traveling out of country so we will need the passports.

I am seeing that it's an additional $140 for me to change my name on the passport and would rather avoid that fee but obviously don't want to have a problem. My license does have my married name as does DS's birth certificate.

Right now the waiting time is 4-6 weeks. We just applied for ours last week. We went and got our photos done at Walgreens then went to our city courthouse to apply(I live in Arizona).

Re: Passport for Toddler and changing name on mine?

I just went through this. After we got married, I changed everything but my passport.

Your passport has to match your license, so I just had to pay $110 for a new passport book with my married name. So annoying!

You have 4-6 weeks, so you should be fine. Just do it now.

Your child will need a passport. I am getting one for my DD Sunday because BOTH parents have to be there. It's a rule, so you cant leave the country with the kid without the father's consent. I am going to the post office in Roosevelt Field mall. It's open Sunday without appointments (most need appointments) 12-3.

Thanks for the info about the post office. Saves me a day!

There used to be a form (4 years ago when i got DD's passport) you could have one parents signature notarized on this form which states that parent knows the other parent is applying for a passport for the child. So both parents don't need to be there when you apply.

We just went on Saturday. We made an appointment at a local post office. You should call yours and see if you can make an appt. With children, both parents have to be present (or I think there's a form that one parent can sign/notarize if they can't go) and the children have to go as well. You need one pic, the passport application (don't sign it when you print it out-you have to sign it in front of them), $80 check made out to the U.S. State Department and $25 made out to Postmaster for the P.O. Processing fee. Also a copy of each parent's driver's license (front and back), original birth certificate for the child. If you go on the U.S. Department it will give you more info and you can fill out the application online and print it out.

As for you, your name on your ticket and passport have to match. So if your passport and ticket are in your maiden name, leave it as is and change it when you come back.

ETA: when I've traveled internationally, I've never been asked for my driver's license only my passport. So I don't think it matters for this trip that your license and passport don't match.

I would do it soon. We got our girls their (they were almost 2 and almost 4 when we did it last year) we sent it out end of April and got it back early June.

There are a few ways to do it. Our post office does it by appointment. They can take your child's photo and do it all at once. They gave us the paperwork there and told us what to bring. You can get that same information on the passport website.

BOTH parents MUST be there as well as the child to do it. We did it on a Saturday for that reason.

There isn't an additional fee to change your name as far as I know. You just have to pay for a whole new passport to change your name, unless you are changing your name within 1 year of having received your current passport.

I still have my maiden name on my passport and traveled to Europe with my maiden name (since that's what matched my passport) without issues.

I was waiting for my passport to expire, at which point I would have to pay to get a new one anyway, before changing my name on it. Seems like the most cost effective way to go about it.

That's actually not true. Your passport does not have to match your license. As long as you book your tickets in your maiden name then you can keep your passport as it is. I traveled twice out of the country after I was married and just booked my flight in my maiden name. I wasn't about to pay $110 for a new passport when I still had a few years left on it before it expired.

This is correct - your license and your passport do NOT have to match. When you travel internationally, the ONLY ID you will be asked for is your passport. So you can easily change your name on your license and keep your passport in your maiden name until it expires and then change it.
