Tipping at Christmas Poll

I'm sure we've discussed this before, but do you tip your garbage men and mailman?

DH and I had a HUGE fight over this.

I do NOT think we need to tip them and he thinks we do.

Re: Tipping at Christmas Poll

Our mailman is a nasty SOB... if a package needs to be brought up to the house, he actually says "you should consider upgrading to a large mailbox so I can leave your packages in there."

First of all, we have a normal, standard sized mailbox. Second of all, we get packages once every 2 months or so! And Third, DUDE, isn't that your JOB?!?!?! Don't get me started.

Our garbage men have cracked every one of our Rubbermaid pails, and even managed to run over the cover of one!

SO....no tip.

Lauren...come on girl...why don't you wanna tip them?

Two reasons really:

1. Because they are mean people (at least the garbage men are). They haphazardly toss our stuff around & they block the whole road on purpose when I'm trying to get by and laugh at me.

2. They aren't waiters/waitresses who work off of tips. Should I get tips when I give a really good training class? Or should I tip the gas man for delivering our gas every month? Or maybe the snowplow guys for plowing our streets? Or the Chinese Food guys who leave a menu on our porch every Monday?

I just don't understand where the line gets drawn. Chat Icon

Re: Tipping at Christmas Poll

I think like everything else, you should tip based on the service you recieved

If your mailman and garbagemen do a great job (or even go a bit above and beyond) then by all means tip

If they S*ck, give you attitude and hardly DO the job they are supposed to, then WHY the heck would you tip them Chat Icon

I live in a building - I do not tip garbagemen, because I dont deal with that. But I do tip the mailman because he is AWESOME and always goes out of his way to bring packages to our door and the like

I'm with you Lauren - you do have to draw the line somewhere, and if you get crap service, do NOT tip

Well, I would say that if they deserved it then I wouldn't mind tipping. But if they don't then I see your point. Have you ever tipped them before?

Re: Tipping at Christmas Poll

I am up in the air about this. I mean we all choose our jobs. I don't get "tipped" for doing my job. I have a couple of clients that I really do alot for they usually send me something but there has been years they haven't. I have never seen my mailman, the garbage men I never see them (I leave before they get there) but them I would tip because they take anything I guess my problem is the mailman. Chat Icon

But didn't they CHOOSE that job? And don't they get fairly well compensated for the suckiness of it?

I tip them both so I get better service...I know it isn't right but if I don't tip the garbage men, they will throw my cans all over the place. Since I do tip them, they leave them standing upright by the curb. Another reason I tip them, is that they TAKE everything we leave out...matresses, TV, couch, etc...They don't have to take that stuff so I like to thank them for doing so.

As for the mailperson, she isn't the greatest but does go out of her way. We are on a walking route and she makes sure the mail doesn't get wet and put packages behind the door...She doesn't have to do this but she does and I think that deserves a tip.

We tip them - a small tip though. Its mostly because we have a garbage man and a mailman in the family....

Its actually DHs friend thats the mailman and he makes out like a BANDIT during Christmastime! He gets TONS of cash and bottles of liquor, cookies, etc.

I agree 100%. Our garbage men take EVERYTHING! They take more items than they are supposed to and I totally appreciate it! We tipped them when we first moved in and I feel they have taken care of us since!

I tip them both and the recycling guys too. They are very nice and do a great job. They also go out of their way. for example, my garbage men will put away my cans after they chuck the garbage out or put it somewhere where they won't end up on the other side of town. My mailman is great too and will leave my packages in a safe spot for me or if I relay to them that I'm expecting something, he makes sure to leave it for me or will look in his wagon to see if he has it before starting his route.

We tip the garbage man, but not the mailman. Not because he's not nice (he is nice), but because it's his job. And I don't think it s*cks nearly as much as being a garbage man. Plus he's always screwing up our mail. Maybe it's because we don't tip! Chat Icon

This is not an issue for me- I also live in a building and I tip my doormen, but not the mailman. He is AWFUL!! I get more mail from my neighbors slipping it under the door than from him.

But I do think tipping is getting out of hand. Everywhere you go there are tip jars... I also don't know where to draw the line and end up tipping almost everyone. But it is starting to get ridiculous. No one tips me for good work. That;s why I get paid! It is so frustrating, especially when you are trying to save $ yourself.

usually if theres a tip jar i purposely WONT tip becuase i think its pretentious. unless i get REALLY good service.

the thing that sux with those jars though, is they never see you put a tip in it!

I don't tip the garbagemen for the same reason, but we do tip the mailiman. He is awesome, he will even walk up 3 flights sometimes to leave a package at our door, unless he thinks it will get taken. I had a family member who was a letter carrier for a while and it can be a demanding job when the weather is awful. If they go above and beyond, I do appreciate it and will tip them.

Re: Tipping at Christmas Poll

We didn't last year since we had just moved in and really didn't know who we're "supposed" to tip. I'm not even sure if it's the same people every day and they really haven't been fabulous or done anything special, but they haven't really been sucky either (though a lot of times our pails aren't standing up at the curb, and a top has gone missing.)
But, assuming we do tip them this year, for the mail person I guess I could leave it in the box, but how do you tip the garbage men when they come and go before you are up?
