This is scary, someone in my office just sent this to me
This is scary. Read below from a girl in my office.
Dear all,
I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. Some of you already know, but we wanted to make everyone aware of a terrifying experience that we had over the weekend. Thank g-d, everything's ok now but we thought friends and family would want to be aware and would want to advise others with babies…
Zane's been teething p retty badly for the past few days, and we decided to give him Baby Orajel on Sunday afternoon. We've given it to him a few times previously, when his first two teeth cu t through, and never had a problem. Scott and I were both sitting with Zane on the floor in his room when I rubbed a dosage on his upper gum. Seconds after I gave it to him, he made a face as if he were crying but no noise came out. I picked Zane up and he immediately went limp in my arms and his face turned blueish. He was not panicking or gasping for air - he was lifeless. This lasted for approximately 15 seconds, but felt like an eternity. Words=2 0cannot convey our feelings during that time (or even now, ever) as we attempted to revive our son. No parent should ever experience such a feeling and no person should ever see something like this happen to a loved one . Without a doubt it was the scariest moment of our lives. Ultimately, Zane "came to" and began to cry hysterically. Thank g-d!!!!!!!!
We spent the evening at the hospital, where Zane underwent numerous tests, all of which came back normal. We also spoke with Zane's pediatrician, who stated that she advises against the use of this product because its purpose is to numb and if it gets into an infant's throat, it may stop them from breathing. Obviously, we wanted to learn more about this product and why this happened so we conducted some internet research. Interestingly, we came across some postings of parents with similar experiences. Fur ther, one website listed a side effect as, "difficulty breathing and grey/blueish face." Also, when we called Zane's daycare to let them know what happened, the owner said that she's heard of this happening before. It's surprising then that no such warning is on the bottle and that more people do not discuss the negative and possible deadly implications of the use of this product.
We don't want to imagine what could've happened if we had given this to him at night, in his cr ib, as we (and many others) have done in the past, and then walked away (although, of course we monitor him throughout the night).
To reiterate, the reason we share the above with you is to strongly advise you20to throw away any Baby Orajel products you have at home and please advise your friends and family of the same. Trust us, it's not worth the possible side effects.
Best,
Scott and Allison

Wow that is scary. When my ds was teething, his ped said not to use the orajel. I just used tylenol, cool things on his gums and alot of rocking and hugging.

That is so scarey. I never used Orajel just because I didn't like the idea of the chemicals, but after reading this I will advise others to avoid it, too.
I found a homeopathic remedy called Camillia which actually works great for teething and I use Motrin when it gets really bad.

There was a post about this on parenting last month - I think someone said it was true:

Our Ped had warned us about using this numbing gels, so we never used it on DS, he said the risk do not out weigh the benefits.

My ped said no Orajel either. I never gave it. We all want a good night's sleep as parents, but at what risk to the child?

I have never given my DD orajel, ive heard this before and its just worth it even if it dosent happen all the time.
I dont like giving a lot of medication to DD (or myself)...she gets Tempra after her shots and once in awhile if her teeth are REALLY bugging her which isnt often thankfully!

I hate these scare tactic emails. Mostly I disregard them. JMHO This is actually valid. My Ped was very clear about not using Orajel on a baby or toddler. It can numb the gag reflex. And just to give you a timeline DS began teething last November (07).
If you do a search on Parenting it was discussed not too long ago.

Re: This is scary, someone in my office just sent this to me
I have heard of dangers of Orajel. Basically, because it is a numbing agent that you put on baby's gums there is a possibility of it getting on the tongue and into the throat and preventing the baby from swallowing and/or breathing.
I don't think it is something that happens very often but I definitely see how it can occur. It is not that far fetched.
I never used it with either of my children

Re: This is scary, someone in my office just sent this to me
I got this in an email awhile ago too.
A mom on parenting posted that she had talked to an emt and he said oral jel was bad for babies and it numbs there throat and gag reflex and child can choke on saliva .. i stopped using immediately. I just use tylenol with my dd and we have no problems.. so doing the same with this baby when the time comes.

ITA! I was told not to use Orajel by my ped also and never have!

I think its just safer to use tylenol or motrin if its really bad. Otherwise we just used Hylands the last time.
