things to do in the city
This summer I should have a few days without kids, and I'd like to go into the city a few times. I feel like I don't take advantage of living so close.
After travel time, I would usually have about 3 hours for each visit.
What would you do in that time?

I love just wandering the Metropolitan Museum.
You can schedule a visit to the Tenement Museum.
Go to the Top of the Rock
Here's some stuff:
nyc
eta: was just perusing the site myself and I had been thinking just recently i've been TO City hall (protests, had Mayor Big Bird actually run from us. yeah.), but i've never been IN City Hall. Just might do that

South Street Seaport is nice to visit.
Battery Park with the SeaGlass Carousel
But honestly I don't know if 3 hours really gives you enough time to enjoy anything. I would feel rushed especially if I was going to grab something to eat.
And of course Central Park!

I am not into museums or history at all really, and I absolutely loved the tenement museum tour. I highly suggest it. You can buy the tickets ahead of time online

Re: things to do in the city
Since you have two young kids, with that time range you might like the adult stuff at the Natural History museum that you might not get to see with them.
There are a bunch of educational exhibits that kids can't appreciate. My favorite area is one level all about the history of all different cultures and is really fascinating (admittedly I'm a SS teacher but I'm sure it would appeal to most adults.)
And of course there are the gems!
The subway leaves right out of Penn which also makes it very easy (the C train.)
Other thoughts not far from Penn:
The High Line Museum at FIT - super close and free, just check the hours. I also like Bryant Park and there is usually something going on there.

Thanks everyone! I should have 3 or 4 days, and I think I'm going to start with the met, and I'm actually thinking about the cloisters too. Highline is also high on my list. I'm looking forward to a few kid free exploration days!

I love the cloisters. You may want to consider driving- there is some parking near Ft. Tryon park.
