They euthanized the whale
Not sure if anyone was following the whale that was stuck on a sandbar in the Moriches inlet. But, NOAA has euthanized it. So terrible.

I'm sure they had very valid reasons for doing so and it was in the whale's best interests.

Something about this story doesn't seem right. People were literally willing to walk out there themselves and help get her free but were told they would be arrested if they did so. And it took over 2 days of this poor creature who was literally crying for anyone to finally do something! So, so sad.

Yep. A barge has been out there for days trying to get close enough to help. Several boats were out there today to try and dig out the sand underneath because she was literally 10 feet from freedom.
NOAA comes waltzing in claiming it had internal injuries without even examining it. Even the Governor ok'ed the rescue attempt, but Federal jurisdiction was more powerful.

I could see it from the end of my block, neighbors are outraged it took 4 days for them to do something and this is what they do?!

I would think that they know what they're doing. Weight of the animal, time out of the water. You can't just dig a whale out with good thoughts a barge and shovels. Too many people around it, machines, etc can stress it out even further. I applaud good intentions but seriously we need to stop thinking we can just save every beached whale and or animal that is found out of it's natural environment because it feels like the right thing to do. Mother Nature is supreme. What will die will die. Why make it suffer?
Want to be upset about something stop the hunting of whales, trashing of our seas and oceans, over population of our beaches and overall just being disgusting humans to our animal CO-inhabitants of this world. But that's my two cents.
Whales have been beaching themselves for decades. Unknown why. We can't always save them. I cringed in disgust and horror when I saw footage of people digging out and dragging a shark through sand to the water. I knew it was dead before it ever saw the water. And it did die. I didn't need to examine it.
I think I would indeed trust the NOAA's assessment of the whale.
but that's just me.

I get the notion of not wanting to infer with animals, they have been here longer, they have been going through this for thousands of years, etc. But if we can help without harm, why should we not?

Especially when it was literally 10 feet from being able to swim away!! It also should not have taken this long for them to finally do something about it. "It seemed like it was not doing well so the decision was made to euthanize it." Well no $hit Sherlock! It's been stuck there for four days because you all took your precious time getting there! Ugh, I'm so angered over this situation.

Yes and they said they would arrest anyone that got within 150 yards I think. Not to mention there is a US Coast Guard station minutes away.

I agree.
Human intervention can be beneficial in some cases in nature, but not always. They were probably waiting to see if this whale could make it on its own.
Also, we're talking about the largest mammal on the planet, land or sea. I'm sure it's not as simple as a bunch of people pushing it back into the water.

What's the harm in trying to help it if it was just going to be killed? I read an account from one of the people on the boats that had a pretty disturbing account of what had been going on. So sad!

Whales are very smart and they beach themselves on purpose when they are injured so that they are able to breathe and don't sink to the bottom. They had a marine biologist from North Carolina come up and assess the whale. After the assessment they decided to euthanize the whale. It is not easy to treat an animal of that size that has internal injuries.

ESTHAMPTON, NY — Mourners will gather Sunday at a vigil for a humpback whale euthanized Wednesday after becoming stranded Sunday on a sandbar in Moriches Bay.
The vigil will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. on the beach by the Coast Guard Station Moriches, located at 100 Moriches Island Road in East Moriches.
Plans are in place to set up a cross "in memory of this beautiful creature," wrote organizers on the Locals Only Facebook page.
A petition has also been created to send to elected officials, demanding change and a "Local Marine Mammal Contingency Plan." To sign the petition, click Here
The petition said the plan would give "local authorities or properly trained citizens to the right supersede the federal government and gain the legal right to provide needed rescue efforts when these federally protected mammals become stranded or beached within locally regulated waters."

Some of the locals said it got stuck on the sandbar because a boat was chasing it while trying to take pics I don't think this whale beached itself intentionally. I wish they would have acted sooner. I read that the whale had open wounds all over it from the seagulls pecking at it for days.

someone chasing him down makes me just as sad. I like to think if the Riverhead foundation thought helping would have helped they would have. They do such great work.

Let me get this straight ....
The locals want to supersede the federal government? Because they think they know better? So what happens when they agree that is a lost cause and don't have the ability to put the animal down or the funds to do either, judge or put it down. What if the funds the keep up such an organization open in the interim when no such need is there becomes too great becomes a hassle to the locals who pay the taxes for it and they choose to disband it then another whale gets stuck? Then there's no such organization but a standing mandate is still there and the federal government can then say "hey you said you had it covered" what then? How long do you intend for this little local power house that supersedes the federally funded, backed, research organization to exist? Ever thought to ask why they don't have a center there? Is there a need for one? Do beached whales happen often enough to justify one? What are the costs?
Being upset is justified.
I'm just a bit over this "LETS SIGN A PETITION" for every little thing we disagree with.

Now you're saying there's one that basically is asking to ignore federal government organizations that are strapped for cash and doing the best they can because you didn't like the results? I think the answer should be to fund those organizations, get involved in them, assist them and make them accountable. Force them to do their jobs, get them better funding. LET them do their jobs. Educate our children to get into those fields.
I wanted to be a Marine Biologist. It has always been my life goal. I still love the field. It fascinates me. Last I recall we have one on this forum, no less. But there are many aspects of it. Personally, I was never one to care for dolphins or want to work at Sea World (or any amusement park or aquarium) I wanted instead to work on unwater oil rig assembly areas working to see what we could do to improve sea creature ecosystems while improving man's outcomes as well. Win-win. Sharks were my favorite subject. Dolphins are mean. Point is, I knew it was a science of paper work and fish poop. It's not a glorious Save Willy job. But I also learned we kill a lot more than we save and we do a lot of damage while crying 'save the fish' that is hypocritical at the very least. Our federal organizations are handcuffed a lot of the time due to public opinion and demand as well as lack of funding.
