The problem with having a small room...

I just don't understand what people expect me to do about it. One of my SIL's came over the other day and saw the nursery. She loved it especially the way it was decorated and the furniture she said was beautiful. The only thing I din't like was that she said that the room was crammy. She didn't mean it in a bad way but hello don't you see that we have a very small apt? We can't afford a house so this is the best we could do. If you have money to buy us a house feel free to do so. I mean give me a break here. We all gotta do the best we can with what we have. What counts is that he gets what he needs.

Yes right now it's no big deal cuz he's a baby and when he gets older it will be harder having a small room but hey there is nothing much we can really do about it.

We may never be able to afford a house because of our salaries but it's not like he is going to be deprived of other stuff in his life.

Re: The problem with having a small room...

Honestly - when you think about it - in the beginning how much time do they really spend in their bedrooms? To sleep and to get changed. I wouldn't worry about it too much.
We have an 12x12 room (if that) and we have a crib, armoire, changing table, rocking horse a small rocking chair (that matched the crib bedding) and a glider. Not to mention the computer desk, file cabinet and bookcase. If she wants to see crammed - send her to my house Chat Icon

Eta - forgot about the hamper in the room too! Chat Icon

Re: The problem with having a small room...

That's just a silly comment. There are some people that make do perfectly fine in a 1 bedroom apartment with a newborn, and it all works out. You need SO little room for the baby when they are young, and often they just use their bassinette to sleep in at first, so the nursery doesn't even need to be fully completed!

Everyone has an opinion!! Chat Icon I'm finding that out already!! Chat Icon

Re: The problem with having a small room...

Well she did say that for now it's no big deal but what about when he gets older.

How about we let him be born first and when he gets older then we'll deal with the small room or rather he'll have to deal with it...LOL Hey I grew up never having a room at all. I slept in a fold out bed in a kitchen. It doesn't get more crammier than that. I should have told her that. I didn't get my own room until I was about 20 years old when they finally got rid of that kitchen. Don't know why they kept that kitchen upstairs when they had a finished basement downstairs but whatever.

The nursery in our house is a small room. We can fit (and it's a tight fit) a crib, a dresser, a bookcase and the glider (not the ottoman now that she's moving - took up too much room). We don't even have room for a changing table, we changed her in the crib and then when we lowered the mattress we change her on the floor. It's worked fine for us and her.

ETA: We bought the house from ILs and my BIL lived in that room until he was out of college and he's fine.

I didn't even get a rocking chair. I can feed him on the couch or in my bedroom. There was absolutely no room for a rocking chair cuz then you would not even be able to walk into the room.

But he's got a small one that one of his aunts made for him.

Re: The problem with having a small room...

Well, your small second bedroom is better than our non-existent second bedroom! We were all set to sign a lease on a new two bedroom apartment when I realized that it's so silly to move for one year when she's not even aware of her surroundings! If anyone has anything to say to me about living in a one bedroom apartment with a baby, they can s-ck it because unless they want to buy me a house NOW, then they really have no argument.

Re: The problem with having a small room...

People are doing the same thing to me. The room is small and doesn't have a closet. My FIL keeps telling me I have to add a closet somehow, others say it's a little small....I don't care. I just ignore them.

I guess it's what we gotta start doing with all these people and their comments, just ignore them.

Re: The problem with having a small room...

When I was growing up, my sister and I shared a room that is basically the size of a shoe box, then we finally got our own rooms when my dad bought the house and converted it to a one family. Then I moved from a shoe box to a closet.

And, I think I turned out just fine Chat Icon

Very well said. Hey at least you had a shoebox for a room. I had a pull out bed in a kitchen. When I was about 19/20 I got a room that was the size of a shoebox as well and I think I turned out fine too.

Chat Icon Girl, are we related?

The first room I had was this tiny little pantry off the side of the kitchen and we had the kind of bed that looked like one bed, but you pulled one out and it became two beds...of course, my older sister made me get the pull out one that weighed 100 lbs. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: The problem with having a small room...

Your baby is going to want to spend all of his time with YOU - and NOT in his room - anyway!
Our nursery isnt that big either but all she's going to do is sleep in it! When we buy a new house and sell this one, we'll look for a house w/bigger bedrooms. Dont worry about what people say!

Re: The problem with having a small room...

we're intentionally putting the baby in the smallest of our bedrooms. They don't need much space and we'd rather have the bigger rooms for the office/guestroom, and for the child when they outgrow the nursery and the next baby goes in there...

don't worry about it.
