What part of Italy are they from ??

My FIL is from Bari - he grew up there and came here when he was about 19/20 and learned the language, met my MIL, etc. About 90% of his leftover relatives - meaning the ones that have not passed on - still live there. These particular cousins are his first cousin and his wife - along with their kids who are grown adults now - They are coming in for a family wedding and are making a huge trip out of it. I'm excited for them - I cannot imagine what it must be like to see this country for the first time - NYC and skyscrapers - I mean, they are from a small town IN Bari - it is a suburb of Bari so it will be amazing for them and I'm really excited - I know NO Italian but I'm trying to verse myself in some conversational stuff.

Other than that - I have my FIL, whom I lovingly refer to as "Spiro" (long story LOL but basically everyone thinks he is Greek all the time for some reason)... so, Spiro will simply translate for me. Chat Icon

Our Italian relatives love the supermarket. They can't believe the amount of food and all of the options!

If they are Catholic, bring them to St. Patrick's Cathedral in the city. That was very special for our relatives.

I think everything else was already listed. Have fun!

great idea forgot about st patricks!!!!

I agree with all the touristy stuff.
My cousins loved the subway and getting around on their own. (on days that we had to work).

They will probably have a plan in mind. Some of our cousins from Italy know NY better than we do for how many times they come and are out and about all day.

I would say let the brave ones get out there and experience New York City for a full day. just walking around, taking it all in and play it by ear, since they will be here for a while, theyre in no rush to pack things in.

The shopping depends on the person. My male cousin (from Australia) couldnt be bothered with shopping. The females on the other hand, shopped and had it shipped constantly, almost daily. Chat Icon

The title of your post reminded me of when we'd go to ITaly, the whole town (the kids, our groupies
Chat Icon. I mean friends Chat Icon) went around town yelling the americans are coming for weeks as soon as they found out the date we'd be there.. and then they'd be propped on our front steps til we drove up Chat Icon

oh please, the whole town knows all your business, and knows the last 5 generations of your family Chat Icon Chat Icon

and if you went to the market to buy fresh meat, eggs and milk (and Angiolina wrapped it nicely in newspaper Chat Icon ) then the whole way home, everyone asked what mom was making for dinner.

God I miss those days. Chat Icon

you could also..

-take them to the wineries and out east on a nice day

Re: The Italians are coming!!

A Long Island Ducks game is fun to if they enjoy baseball. I think you can also get tours of the UN and the Stock Exchange. Don't forget the lighthouses - Montauk point... the Hamptons, Greenport on the north fork - somewhere out that way is a lighthouse tour via boat. Newsday's annual "fun book" should be out soon - watch for that to get some additional ideas. Is a weekend trip to Boston too far? It's a great opportunity to see some wonderful historical locations.

Re: The Italians are coming!!

When DH's relatives come to visit from Poland we do a lot of what you have listed. They like shopping, the beach, the outlets, the vineyards, NYC, museums, parks.

Also, on a day to day basis, if you are not looking to trek very far from home, check your local public library and see what kinds of free programs they will have. Libraries have so much to offer and are so much different than those in other countries.
