The Italians are coming!!
FIL's cousins from Italy - who have never visited this country - are coming to visit for an entire MONTH! My MIL is trying to brainstorm ideas of what to do with them, where to take them, etc. Anyone have any suggestions for what we can do with them that they will enjoy - just keep in mind, they don't speak a WORD of English. I keep referring to them as the Diplomats!
So, what are we going to do with the Diplomats?! The only thing I have so far is the Bronx Zoo and a few things in NYC Help! Anywhere in the tri-state area will do - City, upstate, out east, wherever!
Also, anything that blends Italian culture or has the Italian language involved would be really great!!

Re: The Italians are coming!!
My family came from Italy once. They really enjoyed NYC. Maybe the aquarium. Jones Beach boardwalk. Maybe go fishing out of Captree. Is the LI Game Farm any good anymore?
We did A LOT of cooking, so factor that in as well.

This is what my family always wants to see when they come from Italy:
Niagara Falls Washington DC Top of the Rock Empire State Building Little Italy Ellis Island Statue of Liberty (we usually just take a boat tour to show them a bunch of stuff at once since you cant even climb the statue anymore) THE MALL! Find the biggest one you know - we go to Roosevelt Field and they are amazed. The Wax Museum

Re: The Italians are coming!!
as for food My cousins always say they want to try sushi but then grossed out they can handle chinese food in small amounts but cant believe the quantity of it
let them try some pizza, its so different it shouldnt even have the same name over there ( i love both though )
DEFINITELY treat them to an all american breakfast: bacon, eggs, pancakes etc - my cousins all loved it! although they got grossed out that we eat it early
oh yeah and just wait until you see their reaction to starbucks its a riot

Re: The Italians are coming!!
Also, SHOPPING! anytime my family comes from Europe, they want to shop. the Euro is sooooo good for them right now and clothes are SOOO expensive. even though Italy has so many designers and what have you, clothing and accessories there are insanely expensive, even for the non-designer. I highly suggest a day out at Tanger, Woodbury Commons, Roosevelt Field, etc....
ETA: and if you want them to laugh, take them to an Italian restaurant. It is NOT the same... unless they are Southern Italy, maybe... but any other part of Italy, a lot of what passes for Italian here is just not the same and not nearly as good. the Italians are picky about their food! i have a good place in Queens for truly authentic Northern Italian food...even my FIL approves. let me know...

When my BFF's family comes for a month, the Israelis love McDonald's coffee and the mall. They ship stuff home in bulk and in return they bring us Israeli coffee.

I second the vineyards. What about D.C.? The Opera? How about a hike? There is a nice hike with great view at the top of the palasdaes parkway. It's called Bear Mountain. Or a Yankee game?
Hmm Upstate? Saratoga is beautiful . Montreal is only a about 7 hours and it is AMAZING!!!!!!!

Shopping & lots of it. The exchange rate is amazing for them. Take them to the outlets. Macy's in the city Century 21
If they are like my family in Ireland they will want Abercrombie & Fitch, Tommy Hillfiger, Ralph Lauren & Victoria Beckham jeans (Century 21 has them)

You know - it is funny you say this b/c all they mentioned was:
Niagra Falls
and
MALLS
My FIL said they acted like it was the second coming of Christ - he doesn't know what they like the idea of seeing more: the walt whitman mall or Niagra! LOL!
...thanks so much everyone - these are the best suggestions EVER!!
Thanks!!!!
I'm also going to TRY and find an Italian show - something that is fun to watch that is IN Italian -- we'll see, there has to be something!

Re: The Italians are coming!!
Our Italian relatives love the supermarket. They can't believe the amount of food and all of the options!
If they are Catholic, bring them to St. Patrick's Cathedral in the city. That was very special for our relatives.
I think everything else was already listed. Have fun!

DH's cousin lives in Switzerland. When she comes, she hits Tanger or Secaucus outlets everytime.
I agree shopping is a must.
Plays...maybe Tony & Tina's wedding? Or is that too close to home?

Re: The Italians are coming!!
I agree with all the touristy stuff. My cousins loved the subway and getting around on their own. (on days that we had to work).
They will probably have a plan in mind. Some of our cousins from Italy know NY better than we do for how many times they come and are out and about all day.
I would say let the brave ones get out there and experience New York City for a full day. just walking around, taking it all in and play it by ear, since they will be here for a while, theyre in no rush to pack things in.
The shopping depends on the person. My male cousin (from Australia) couldnt be bothered with shopping. The females on the other hand, shopped and had it shipped constantly, almost daily.
The title of your post reminded me of when we'd go to ITaly, the whole town (the kids, our groupies
. I mean friends ) went around town yelling the americans are coming for weeks as soon as they found out the date we'd be there.. and then they'd be propped on our front steps til we drove up
What part of Italy are they from ??
