How hard was digging up the old bushes? How deep are the roots? I have some bushes I want to dig up on the side of our house. I bet they have been there for twenty + years.

Re: The front yard adventure...

Hard? some chain and a good 4-wheel drive truck.. came out no prob!

I have dug out similar species and size bushes before.. DW and I did so in front of MILs house... not gonna lie, its a PITA...

There were 4-5 of them, took a few hours. i ended up with 2 holes about 4ft deep and a sore back, knees, arms, feet etc.... if you can and if they are not close to any foundation just yank them out and deal with the roots when your planting.

It's pretty easy to get dark brown downspouts. White and brown seem to be the two most common colors for them. It wouldn't be that difficult to just replace the pipe.

The PVC pipe at the bottom you may need to paint. Not sure if you can get brown PVC.

I doubt i would be allowed to change the pipe... co-ops have crazy rules.

You ripped out mature bushes instead of trimming them back?

Hmmmm... Chat Icon

How about an exterior grade sticker to put on the pipe?

http://www.fastdecals.com/shop/decal-colors-and-patterns/brick-and-stone-decals-and-stickers.html

You can camouflage the downpipe to look just like brick.... Chat Icon

BTW, it looks soo much nicer with those scraggly bushes gone....

Hence the "Crazy" rules comment... you are allowed to make just about any change you want to the exterior as long as: (my interpretation of the "rules")

1. you have an agreement with your up/down stairs neighbor.
2. Its not a permanent structure.
3. does not alter the structure of the building.
4. isnt an eyesore.

ABSOLUTELY!!! Trimming wasn't an option.. to trim them back and get them to a size we wanted would have taken YEARS. The rule i was given was 3-4 inches every 6 weeks to maintain "green".

If i just hacked them down to "the size" we would have nothing but sticks... if they even survived...

I think it looks great.
I live in a co-op, but we have a private entrance, so the area in front of it is pretty much ours to garden. The co-op really only does the lawns & the entrance ways.

We have bushes that I hate--they linethe patio & have thorns, wich can get kind of dangerous, and then aren't doing well, despite our efforts over the last 4 summers.

The co-op board said we could pull them out, but I am not sure how easy that will be without disturbing the rest of the garden, but yours look great--they make we want to dig mine out!

Re: The front yard adventure...

I love the bushes you got. Where did you get them I usually go to Dee's in Oceanside and get a ton of stuff during their sale, but considering that I'm about to pop any second not sure thats happening and when they're stuff isn't on sale they're pricey I feel
