Re: The Flu Shot- Debunking the myth
See--my understanding is that getting and fighting off the live flu virus itself (not the dead one in the vaccine) can wreak havoc on your body and cause long term side effects well after you're "recovered."
I'll take the vaccine and fight off the dead virus every time.
The fact that I am also stopping the spread of the disease and helping to provide herd immunity for the weak is just a bonus.

Re: The Flu Shot- Debunking the myth
I really don't think there is a right answer to this. For most debatable topics, evidence exists on both sides...which is why they are debatable in the first place.
Me? I don't get the flu shot. I don't have some deep-rooted reason as to why I don't; I just never have in my life, not even as a child. When DH and I have children, we would likely have them get it as I know their immune systems are more fragile.

Re: The Flu Shot- Debunking the myth
I am not allowed to have immunizations due to an anaphylaxis response. When I heard about the egg free vaccine I was so happy because I had the flu last year and was so ill. I asked my DR and pharmacy about getting the egg free and they both said I could not get it because it is not made for people with severe egg allergies.

Did you ask your PCP DR or your allergist? The only reason I ask is recently I heard someone saying their child got the egg free one from the allergist but the regular doctor said no.

My regular doctor. I current don't see an allergist. I went to the pharmacy who called the company and they said not to administer. I'm due for allergy testing soon so I will ask. Thanks for the idea.

Definitely ask. Allergist regularly give them to those with egg allergies. They will know if it is safe for you or not. I would trust the allergist over your PCP or pharmacist. Also if you get it don't go the a pharmacy it is safer to do it at the allergist office who is prepared if a reaction occurs.

Re: The Flu Shot- Debunking the myth
I won't judge you as long as you promise not breathe or sneeze near those of us who do not have the option of protecting ourselves with the flu shot (ie, newborns under 6 months of age, immune compromised children and adults, people like the pp above with egg allergies etc - some vulnerable people who can become quick sick by the flu).
Eta - learn about herd immunity and how it protects society's most vulnerable members. Those who are not eligible for the flu shot rely on us to protect ourselves, and limit the number of people infected who can therefore spread it to them. It is a vital concept of community health.

I should hope that people don't sneeze or cough or breathe on someone else regardless if they have the shot or not! Gross!

I have, in 33 years- never gotten the flu. I have quite a few friends who vaccinated their children this year against the flu (their choice and I support that decision as their parents) , their children not only got the flu but one kid got it TWICE. So it's not a guarantee that you won't get it. The cdc can only guess which strain it's going to be. Like I said, I support those who choose to get it, but I dont.

I think it's clear how you feel about the flu shot. But that doesn't mean it's right for everyone and keep in mind the flu shot only protects you against a limited strain of the flu, it's still entirely possible to get it regardless. You're not 100% protected.
ETA: Misread that word, I'm sorry.

Re: The Flu Shot- Debunking the myth
I found this thread to be very interesting. I work in a hospital and the policy is that if you don't receive a flu shot you will have to wear a mask the entire shift for the duration of the flu season Nov-March. I'm not a nurse or doctor but I do have contact with patients as I have to conduct assessments. The patients that are elderly and not capable of providing proper information, I would normally contact family members to obtain information. For the rest of my time I sit at my desk but I still have to wear a mask. I could understand wearing one if I'm going into a patients room but just sitting at my desk is ridiculous. The hospital has placed much pressure on those workers that have chosen not to get the flu shot. I for one have not received the flu shot and do not plan on getting one nor have I in the past. I know I have to wear a mask which sucks but it certainly feels like us anti-flu shots employees are being viewed as the "bad" employees for not following procedure. Apparently this is the first time that masks have to be worn in the hospital. Visitors/patients don't have to put a mask on which does not make any sense since they could easily pass the flu onto employees.

yeah they do want to label you, single you out. Sooner or later someone is going to tell the patients YOU refused the flu shot. I've heard of places that will put you out of work for not getting the flu shot.
Ironically, myself, husband and daughter never get the flu shot. I've had the flu 3 times in my 38yrs. Once was H1N1. AJ got the swine flu too. It was not fun but it wasn't catastrophic or bad enough we would get the shot to avoid it again. especially as the shot would only work if we specifically got THAT strain. Even our doctor had to admit that as long as you take care of yourself, have no underlying health conditions and seek medical help when necessary the flu shot is NOT necessary.
The more I ask the more I find that folks without the flu shot rarely ever get the flu and if they do its just a week out of school or work at most but they nearly do the same for allergies or colds.

The herd mentality goes both ways.

She was talking about herd IMMUNITY. Not mentality. Two entirely different things.

Could you possibly be more judgmental? I hate to be the one to tell you this, but getting the flu shot doesn't mean you won't get the flu. The flu shot every year is also just the best guess of what strain flu will be going around. In all likelihood, the flu that comes around this year may not be the one you are vaccinated against. If you are so worried, don't take your babies out this winter. But really get of your high horse already. If people want to get the shot they will, if they don't, they won't. It's still a free country( for the time being at least). Respect others choices like they respect yours. I'm certainly not going to base my health decisions on what someone on LIF says, nor should anybody else. I will do what me and my Dr. think is best.

Re: The Flu Shot- Debunking the myth
I'm very pro vaccine I go by my doc schedule but I do not get the flu shot this shot is the one shot that even when they happen to get the strains right the shot STILL ONLY has a 60% chance of being effective against protecting one from getting it that's not much more than being a 50/50 shot of working and that's only if they got the strains right....never had the shot and never got the flu ....I respect the decision of others to get it for themselves even though its debatable either way so the judgment on this thread is ridiculous

You probably should not go out if you are afraid of diseases. Germs are everywhere, hate to break it to you.
Don't you think government sources have their own bias lol???
