I am so nervous about telling my boss (we are such a small office) I know they will be siked but.... should i tell them my maternity plan now (at 3 months) or.....just let us all be excited and regroup in a couple weeks or so?
we dont have anything spelled out.
is there anything us preggies are allowed to take off according to NY state law? I have no clue about this stuff.......

I told my office almost right away because there are only 3 of us and it would be hard to hide it.

I didn't tell them any plans yet because honsetly, I don't know what is going on yet.

Re: telling job- -

When I told my office, they asked right then what my plan was - you could say you are unsure if you aren't ready to answer.

NYS gives you 6 weeks disability for a vaginal birth or 8 weeks for a C-section.

The Family Medical Leave Act says that your employeer must hold your position for 12 weeks. I think this only applies if there are 50 employees are more at your location.

Re: telling job- -

good luck telling your job! when I told everyone was so excited and I felt very lucky! they may want to know your maternity plans and you should try to have an answer ready. if not, let them know you have a plan to talk to HR and will get back to them as soon as you get that information.

Re: telling job- -

If your office is small (under 50 employees), you're not eligible for FMLA. Technically, your employer only has to give you 6 or 8 weeks off, which is the period you're considered disabled in NY. Has anyone in your office been pregnant before? How much time were they allowed to take off?

Your employer also can't treat you differently than other employees b/c of your pregnancy. If other employees were allowed 3 months to recover from an illness or injury, you should be allowed a similar amount of time off.

When are you telling them? I'd be prepared to talk about your plan for maternity leave, but feel them out first. You may want to let the news sink in and then bringit up in a few weeks. I'd certainly talk about it with them in the next 2-3 months. Good luck! If everything goes well at my appointment tomorrow, I may be telling work too.

I told my bosses last week, at 12 weeks, and I did the same thing the previous poster did...I didn't tell them plans bc I really don't know what I'm doing yet, ideally I want to work from home a few days a week, so I want to broach that subject with them as it gets closer to the time of me leaving

thanks for your response..... my office only has 4 full time salary employees. all the rest are independent contractors.

i am the 1st person to be pregnant... everyone else is older.. i will prob tell them on friday, things are usually mellow and upbeat! does anyone have the NY state link on maternity leave?

Re: telling job- -

I told at 12 weeks because they had me scheduled to go to a huge trade show in Orlando when I will be 7.5 month PG with twins. I didn't think that would be good for me so I had to tell. My boss was really excited and we bonded over the fact that we had both done IVF so it worked out well. I wanted to wait until 15 weeks or so..

Re: telling job- -

personally, i would never tell them my plans that early. plans change and they could penalize you (in a sneaky way) for your decision.

i'm due in 2 weeks and i JUST told my job a week ago when i'm planning in coming back. i'm glad i waited because my plan now is totally different than my original one

Yes, you are considered disabled for 6 or 8 weeks after delivering a baby and it is illegal to fire someone when they are out on disability. Here is some information on the Pregnancy Discrimination Act

Re: telling job- -

I haven't told a lot of the higher ups yet, but I suspect they probably know. I have told a lot of other people I work with.

A lot of people recently had babies in my company and they seem like they are willing to work with you.

I am going to try to do a work-from-home thing if I can, but really, my secret-secret plan is to take maternity leave from this job and find another one that is more family-friendly, and then quit. I'm evil!!! I am not 100% crazy about my job now as it is though and would've probably looked for something new already if I hadn't found out I was expecting!

i hear ya about the more family friendly job. although the job market stinks.....
wouldnt it be ideal to be able to stay home for a year? we might be purchasing a house but i am so torn b/c if we rent I can stay home for a year or so! i hate all these desicions..... altho everything does end up working out one way or the other.
